RTVE shifts La 1 afternoon schedule for Toda una Mujer

Spanish public broadcaster Radiotelevisión Española is altering its La 1 afternoon television lineup on Thursday, October 1, and Friday, October 2, to premiere the British drama series Toda una Mujer. The temporary scheduling adjustment will displace established Spanish period drama La Promesa to introduce the international acquisition to weekday viewers.

Under the revised schedule announced by the network, the premiere episode of Toda una Mujer will air at 18:30 on both Thursday and Friday. To fit the new show into the grid, La 1 will open its afternoon drama block at 17:45 with a new episode of Valle Salvaje, followed by Toda una Mujer at 18:30, and conclude with the delayed broadcast of La Promesa.

RTVE confirmed through its official communications channels that the weekday afternoon broadcasts are intended as a short-term promotional showcase. Network schedulers placed the two-part premiere between Valle Salvaje and La Promesa to draw on the strong viewership of the channel's most established afternoon shows before moving the series to its permanent home on Saturday night prime time.

Radiotelevisión Española, the state-owned public broadcaster operating La 1, has increasingly turned to foreign acquisitions to complement its domestic production lineup following a summer of major international rights purchases. The afternoon slot on La 1, traditionally known as the sobremesa, relies heavily on historical fiction series to capture daily audience share across Spain.

The temporary displacement affects La Promesa, a popular Spanish period soap opera that centers on the fictional aristocracy of Luján and their domestic staff in early twentieth-century Spain. Alongside Valle Salvaje, another recent historical drama set in eighteenth-century Spain, La Promesa serves as the cornerstone of La 1's daytime ratings performance.

Schedule changes for La 1 daily dramas

Toda una Mujer is a television adaptation based on the celebrated 1979 bestselling novel A Woman of Substance by British author Barbara Taylor Bradford. When the miniseries originally premiered on Britain's Channel 4 network, it generated record-breaking viewership figures and established itself as one of the broadcaster's most successful drama launches.

The narrative transports viewers to Yorkshire in 1911 to follow Emma Harte, a young domestic servant working for the wealthy Fairley family. After facing mistreatment from her employers, an unexpected pregnancy, and betrayal by her aristocratic lover, Emma is banished from the estate and vows to seek calculated vengeance against those who humiliated her.

British drama narrative and setting

Spanning six decades across a dual timeline, the story chronicles Emma's rise from extreme poverty to the 1970s and 1980s. Over the course of the saga, Harte overcomes personal adversity and institutional barriers in a male-dominated society to establish a vast commercial empire comprising retail department stores, real estate properties, and corporate holdings.

Weekend prime-time destination

Following the initial two-day showcase on Thursday, October 1, and Friday, October 2, Toda una Mujer will vacate the weekday afternoon slot. RTVE will move the series into regular Saturday night prime-time broadcasts, strengthening the public broadcaster's weekend evening schedule with international dramatic content.
