Dr Vincent Valinducq has highlighted a breakthrough retinal implant that could restore sight to more than five million age-related macular degeneration patients.
Speaking on the French morning broadcast Bonjour ! La Matinale TF1, Valinducq described the micro-implant technology as a major advance for individuals suffering from central vision loss.
In a clinical study evaluating the device over a 12-month period, 84 percent of the 38 participating patients reported being able to read words, letters and shapes once again.
The tiny electronic device measures just two millimetres by two millimetres. Surgeons place the miniature chip at the back of the eye, directly behind the retina, where it communicates with the visual processing pathway.
How the camera glasses process images
Patients use the implant by wearing a specialized pair of glasses fitted with a miniature camera. The camera captures real-time video of what lies directly in front of the wearer and transmits the data to an external control box.
This portable unit processes the incoming video feed to amplify color, contrast and the physical dimensions of objects. The box then transmits the enhanced signal back to the glasses, which project it into the eye and onward to the brain.
Sub-retinal implants act as artificial light receptors for patients with damaged eyes. In healthy vision, light striking the retina triggers chemical and electrical signals that travel along the optic nerve to the brain visual cortex.
When retinal diseases destroy light-sensing cells, the pathway is broken. The electronic microchip restores this signal flow by electrically stimulating surviving nerve cells, allowing the brain to interpret visual inputs.
The impact of macular degeneration
Age-related macular degeneration, known in French as DMLA, is a progressive medical condition that destroys the macula. Located at the centre of the retina, the macula is responsible for high-resolution central vision.
Loss of macular function severely restricts independence. The macula provides the detailed sight needed for everyday tasks, including reading fine print, recognizing facial features and driving a car.
Valinducq explained on air that sufferers perceive a large dark circle in the middle of their field of view. The condition initially appears as a light or hazy spot before gradually darkening into a solid black patch that obscures central vision.
The DMLA Association reports that macular degeneration is the primary cause of visual disability among adults over 50 years old. In France alone, nearly 1.5 million people currently live with the condition.
