The 1995 Studio Ghibli film Whisper of the Heart is coming to Russian cinemas in a new 4K restoration. The animated feature follows a 14-year-old girl navigating her first romantic feelings and search for a calling in life.
The film was the only directorial work by Yoshifumi Kondo, who spent many years at Ghibli as an animator before helming the project. Kondo died a few years after the film’s release.
Art historian and animation scholar Anna Golda told NSN that Kondo had absorbed much from Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki, with whom he had worked even before the studio was established, but retained his own distinct style. She said the resulting film showed his inheritance of Miyazaki and Isao Takahata’s creative methods in its story, visuals, and certain artistic choices, while being more lyrical and romantic than Miyazaki’s typical work.
Golda said the film would resonate with a broad audience despite being made more than 30 years ago. She argued its themes of first love and self-discovery were universal, noting that every new generation goes through those experiences as if for the first time, which meant the subject matter was unlikely to age.
She added that the Tokyo residential setting, with its apartment blocks, concrete buildings, and asphalt streets, would feel familiar to Russian viewers accustomed to urban housing developments of the second half of the twentieth century.
Golda also described the film as an accessible entry point for viewers with no prior experience of Japanese animation. She said that while Miyazaki’s work was dense with references to Japanese mythology, religion, Shinto, and Buddhism, Whisper of the Heart built its story around universal themes that any viewer could connect with, making it enjoyable regardless of how deeply a person was already immersed in the genre.
The film is based on a manga of the same name by Aoi Hiiragi. Golda said the adaptation conveyed the emotions the artist had put into the source material in a way that felt genuine and sincere.
