'Reina Roja' on Prime Video: 7-Episode Spanish Thriller

Reina Roja, a Spanish crime thriller streaming on Prime Video, has drawn favorable audience reviews on FilmAffinity and IMDB since premiering in February 2024. The series has just seven episodes, which can be watched in full in about six hours.

The show was created and written by Amaya Muruzábal and Salvador Perpiñá for Prime Video. It is based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Spanish author Juan Gómez-Jurado, published in November 2018, the first in a trilogy about a character named Antonia Scott that continues with Loba Negra and Rey Blanco.

A genius investigator with a dark past

Antonia Scott has an IQ of 242, making her officially the most intelligent person on Earth, according to the story. That extraordinary intelligence earned her the role of the "Reina Roja" (Red Queen) within a secret, experimental police project, though what once seemed a gift became a curse, and she ended up losing everything.

The plot kicks off when the son of a powerful businesswoman is found grotesquely murdered in her mansion and the daughter of Spain's richest man is kidnapped. The "Reina Roja" organization springs into action, and Mentor, Antonia's former boss, turns to Jon Gutiérrez, a visceral and temperamental Basque police officer on the verge of being expelled from the force, to bring Antonia back in to solve the two cases.

Chemistry between the two leads

One of the keys to the series is the clashing personalities of Antonia and Jon, two very different people who, as the investigation progresses, discover they admire and complement each other almost as much as they irritate one another.

Victoria "Vicky" Luengo plays Antonia Scott, while Hovik Keuchkerian plays Jon Gutiérrez. The main cast also includes Emma Suárez, Eduardo Noriega, Andrea Trepat, Celia Freijeiro, Nacho Fresneda, Àlex Brendemühl, Urko Olazabal, José Ángel Egido, Fernando Guallar, Karmele Larrinaga, Pere Brasó, Vicenta Ndongo and Antonio Ponce.

Ratings and what comes next

On FilmAffinity, the series holds an average score of 5.8 out of 10 from nearly 8,000 ratings. On IMDB, it stands at 6.8 out of 10 after more than 6,500 user votes.

The single season released so far has seven episodes, each running about 50 minutes. A second season adapting Loba Negra, the second novel in Gómez-Jurado's series, is set to premiere on October 2, 2026.
