PUMA launches 'Never Not Suede' sneaker campaign in Athens

PUMA has launched the Greek edition of its global "Never Not Suede" campaign in the heart of Athens, featuring local music artists Negros tou Moria and Marseaux.

The campaign uses the city's signature yellow taxis as a central backdrop to highlight the PUMA Suede Classic sneaker in three colourways: classic black, bold orange, and coffee brown.

The shoe features a low silhouette, a suede leather base, the signature leather PUMA Formstrip on the side, and a rubber outsole.

First introduced nearly six decades ago, the PUMA Suede has maintained a constant presence in global street culture. The German sportswear brand originally launched the low top silhouette as a performance athletic shoe in 1968. The footwear initially gained prominence on professional basketball courts before transitioning into wider popular culture. Over the following decades, the suede leather model became a staple in skateboarding circles, the emerging hip hop scene, and mainstream fashion.

Athenian yellow taxi

The new promotional effort centres on the familiar, everyday space of an Athenian yellow taxi, framing the vehicle as a place where different personalities, routes, and stories cross paths for a few minutes at a time.

Yellow taxis are a ubiquitous sight across the Greek capital, serving as a primary mode of transport for millions of residents and visitors navigating the busy metropolitan streets on a daily basis.

The sportswear brand has created two distinct narrative sequences for the campaign to reflect different aspects of modern urban culture, tied together by the sneakers.

In the first story, Negros tou Moria is depicted in a highly recognisable Athenian scenario, riding in a taxi with a driver who always has something to say. The resulting scene captures a humorous and direct snapshot of daily life in the city.

Negros tou Moria is a prominent Greek rapper of Ghanaian descent who frequently blends modern hip hop and trap sounds with traditional Greek musical elements.

Night rhythms of Athens

The second story follows Marseaux navigating the night time rhythms of Athens, focusing on the singer's spontaneity and unpretentious aesthetic.

Marseaux is a popular figure in the contemporary Greek pop music landscape, known for her energetic releases, her involvement with the WNCfam music collective, and her strong appeal among younger audiences.

Despite following different routes through the city, the two artists arrive at the same conceptual point, using the footwear as a common code for their personal expression.

PUMA stated that a defining characteristic of the Suede model over its history is that it has never been exclusively tied to a single generation, musical scene, or specific style of dress.

Instead, the brand noted that the sneaker takes on a different character depending on the wearer and how they incorporate it into their personal aesthetic.

Evolving environment

The Athens campaign aims to reflect this concept, comparing the shoe's enduring relevance in a changing environment to the Greek capital's continuous evolution while retaining its own distinct character.

The project explores how the historic sneaker continues to acquire new meaning through modern Athenian life, contemporary music, and individual personal style.

The new PUMA Suede collection is currently available to purchase through the brand's physical retail locations and online store.

The footwear is also stocked at PUMA concession points in the Attica City Link department store and The Mall Athens in the capital, as well as the Mediterranean Cosmos shopping centre.

City Link and The Mall Athens are major commercial hubs in the Greek capital, while Mediterranean Cosmos is a large retail complex located in the northern port city of Thessaloniki.
