Project Hail Mary, the science fiction film based on Andy Weir's novel, is now among the most watched titles on Prime Video after a strong run in theaters. The streaming debut had to clear a difficult bar, given how crowded 2026 has been with science fiction releases from major franchises and original productions alike.

Streaming performance
The film stars Ryan Gosling and was directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. Gosling plays Ryland Grace, a teacher turned astronaut who becomes humanity's last hope on a deep space mission to save the sun from dying.
According to the latest confirmed data, the film has already racked up 860 million minutes of viewing on Prime Video during its first week. It currently ranks third on the platform's list of most watched movies. That is no longer the top spot, but it remains a high enough ranking to show the film is still performing well.
Box office recovery
The film's biggest challenge was its budget of 200 million dollars, which meant it needed to earn more than double that amount just to break even. After its theatrical run, it clearly exceeded expectations, surpassing 680 million dollars at the box office. It also won over critics, with audiences praising its science fiction as endearing, funny and thoroughly entertaining.
The article also notes that another Prime Video science fiction hit this year was Mercy, a thriller starring Chris Pratt and Rebecca Ferguson.
