Princess Eugenie has given birth to a baby girl in Portugal, the newest member of the Brooksbank family whose name has not yet been announced. The baby is now 15th in line to the British throne, moving the Duke of Edinburgh down to 16th place.
The child is the first British royal baby born on Portuguese soil. Royal births abroad are not unprecedented, since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's daughter Lilibet was born in California in 2021, as was Maud Windsor in 2013.
Announcement and life in Lisbon
Eugenie announced the arrival on her personal social media pages, sharing a photo of the newborn wearing a pink outfit and hat while holding her father's finger. She wrote that she and Jack were so excited to announce the arrival of their baby girl, Baby Girl Brooksbank, and that they were both completely in love with their little girl.
The birth took place at a hospital in Lisbon. The family splits its time between England and Portugal because of her husband Jack Brooksbank's work at the CostaTerra Golf and Ocean Club. Eugenie has kept a low public profile, with her most recent appearance in June at Peter Phillips's wedding in the Cotswolds, partly because of publicity surrounding her parents, Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson.
A family naming tradition
As with her two older sons, August and Ernest, Eugenie is expected to choose a name with historical ties to Queen Victoria. Her firstborn, August Philip Hawke, was named after Prince Albert, while her second son, Ernest George Ronnie, drew on Duke Ernest of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, King George V, and her own grandfather, Ronald Ferguson.
Announcing her second son's birth in 2023, Eugenie said she and Jack wanted to share that their son, Ernest George Ronnie Brooksbank, was born on 30 May 2023 at 8:49, weighing 7.1 pounds, named after his great-great-great-grandfather, his grandfather George, and her own grandfather Ronald. She added that Augie was already loving his new role as big brother.
