Princess Eugenie Names Daughter Adelaide Elizabeth Annina

Princess Eugenie of Britain and her husband Jack Brooksbank have announced the name of their newborn daughter, Adelaide Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank, following her birth in Portugal on August 3.

The announcement was made on Instagram on Monday, August 17, exactly two weeks after the delivery. Adelaide is the couple's third child, joining her two older brothers, five-year-old August and three-year-old Ernest.

Eugenie shared three photographs of the baby alongside the announcement. The images showed the newborn wrapped in a light blue blanket, a close-up view of her hand, and a photo capturing her first meeting with her brothers.

Writing on social media, Eugenie said that two weeks ago to the day they had welcomed their daughter into the world and had spent the most special, warm and loving time together since.

Family homage and name meaning

She explained that Adelaide was named after three people they love and admire from past and present, including her great-grandmother whom they hold close to their hearts. She added that the name forms part of both English and Portuguese history, two places they love and call home, while noting that Augie and Ernie were already acting as the best big brothers.

The royal family had initially announced the baby's arrival on August 4, though her name was not disclosed at the time. The delivery took place in Portugal, where Eugenie and Brooksbank maintain a residence, making it a rare instance of a member of the British royal family being born outside the United Kingdom.

Line of succession

Adelaide does not hold the title of Her Royal Highness. She is placed 15th in line of succession to the British throne, a position that moves the Duke of Edinburgh down to 16th place.

She is the 15th great-grandchild of the late Queen Elizabeth II and the third to be born since 2022. For Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, she is his fifth grandchild, following the birth of Princess Beatrice's daughter, Athena Mapelli Mozzi, in January of the previous year.

Princess Eugenie is the younger daughter of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Sarah, Duchess of York. She married businessman Jack Brooksbank in 2018 at St George's Chapel in Windsor, with the family sharing their time between the United Kingdom and Portugal.
