Porto Santo, a small island in the Portuguese archipelago of Madeira, is attracting travellers seeking quiet relaxation away from the noise of mass tourist resorts.
The island is distinguished by its dry climate, volcanic terrain, and an impressive golden coastline. Its primary signature attraction is Praia do Porto Santo, a continuous nine-kilometre beach that stretches across nearly the entire southern side of the island.
Fine golden sand combines with the clear, blue-green waters of the Atlantic Ocean to create a setting reminiscent of a tropical paradise. Beyond its appearance, the sand possesses therapeutic properties because it is rich in calcium and magnesium. The town's most prominent landmark is the Casa Museu Colombo, the residence where explorer Christopher Columbus is believed to have lived for a period following his marriage to the daughter of the local governor.
The historic home now operates as a public museum. It displays antique maps, nautical instruments, and historical artifacts dating from the Age of Discovery, when European navigators charted global ocean routes.
Volcanic rock formations and panoramic views
Porto Santo also contains distinctive geological features, including Pico de Ana Ferreira. The site is widely known for its striking basalt formations, which resemble a giant church organ carved directly into the rock face. Basalt is a dark, fine-grained volcanic rock formed when lava cools quickly after an eruption.
For photography enthusiasts, a visit to the Miradouro da Portela viewpoint is considered essential. The spot offers the island's most iconic panoramic view, featuring traditional windmills atop the hill with the expansive beach stretching into the distance.
