The Santa Judicial District in Peru celebrated the Day of the Judge on August 4, with court president Samuel Joaquín Sánchez Melgarejo praising the difficult and often misunderstood mission of administering justice.
Sánchez Melgarejo said it was important to highlight the role of judges, to whom the state has entrusted the responsibility of providing justice and guaranteeing fundamental rights including health, life, work and accessible, swift and timely justice.
Mobile justice and digital tools
In his speech, the court president said mobile justice services offer a fast and accessible response for the population of Áncash. He said judges must reach out to citizens and respond to their needs.
Sánchez Melgarejo also praised the creativity of the court's IT department, which developed the Justired module as an innovative practice supporting judicial work. The tool allows people in remote areas to access judicial services in real time without traveling, including case file consultation and tracking across all legal matters, judicial guidance, and the Electronic Filing Desk.
Ceremony and flag raising
Before the main ceremony, at 9:00 a.m., magistrates from the Santa Judicial District took part in a Catholic Mass at the San Carlos Borromeo parish. The National Flag was then carried through the city's main streets to the front of the Santa Court's central headquarters, where Sánchez Melgarejo raised it.
Origins of the observance
The Day of the Judge was officially established in Peru through Decree Law No. 18918 in 1971. The date honors the memory of liberator José de San Martín, who established the High Chamber of Justice in 1821.
