Outer Banks Ends Season 5 as Pogues Find Royal Merchant Gold

Netflix series Outer Banks has concluded after five seasons, resolving the fate of main villain Chandler Groff and the Royal Merchant gold.

The final episodes bring an end to the story of the Pogues, showing Kiara take revenge on Groff during a storm before the group successfully recovers their long-sought treasure.

Outer Banks, created for Netflix as an action adventure teen drama, follows a group of working class teenagers known as the Pogues who live in coastal North Carolina. While the show is not among the longest running series on the streaming service, its final chapter arrived to wrap up a storyline filled with rivalries, family secrets, and lost fortunes.

As writer Marcos Catalán noted, the final episodes were far from perfect and closed several plot lines in an excessively simple and convenient manner. However, the conclusion provided a satisfying resolution to the narrative despite having numerous storylines to address. The fifth season was tasked with resolving Kiara's pursuit of vengeance, Groff's ultimate fate, the future of the core group, and the mystery surrounding both the Royal Merchant gold and the blue crown following the death of JJ at the end of season four.

Climax in a Hurricane and Groff's Fate

The major confrontation of the final season takes place in the middle of a severe hurricane striking the Outer Banks. Kiara confronts Chandler Groff after he murdered JJ, taking decisive action during a battle aboard a vessel.

Following a struggle on the boat, Kiara leaves Groff hanging over the water and cuts the rope securing him, causing him to fall into the sea. Groff drowns in the ocean during the storm, closing the story of the primary antagonist of the season. For Kiara, however, the act of revenge fails to solve her underlying grief over her loss.

The Mystery of the Blue Crown

Throughout the season, Kiara held onto the belief that the ancient blue crown possessed the power to bring JJ back to life, ultimately using the artifact with that hope. The crown does not restore her boyfriend to life, but instead triggers a vivid vision in which she relives key moments of her relationship with him.

That emotional experience allows Kiara to begin accepting her loss and moving forward with her life. She subsequently uses a portion of her fortune to purchase and rebuild the Maybank home, while deciding to pursue her dream of becoming a marine biologist.

The blue crown does not remain with the protagonists. A collector named Finch acquires the item, convinced he can use it to bring back his deceased daughter. Kiara explains to Finch that the artifact works, though not in the way he expects, before Finch escapes with the crown. Outer Banks leaves the mystery of the artifact without a completely closed answer, though the resolution is not required to complete the story of the Pogues.

Recovery of the Royal Merchant Gold

The legendary gold from the Royal Merchant ship ultimately ends up where it belongs. During the hurricane, Kiara was forced to part with a portion of the treasure in the storm.

Pope successfully calculates the exact location where the lost gold sank into the sea, allowing the group to retrieve the fortune. The recovered treasure enables John B to rebuild his father's house, while Kiara recovers the Maybank property and Pope rebuilds his family's business.

Pope and Cleo become engaged following the recovery of the gold and move together to Tannyhill. Meanwhile, John B and Sarah receive a traditional resolution to their storyline after navigating pregnancy and numerous obstacles throughout the season.

John B and Sarah welcome a baby boy, whom they name JJ in honor of their deceased friend. One year later, the couple celebrates their wedding surrounded by the Pogues and numerous characters from across the series. Rafe, who fled with Sofia to evade arrest for his crimes, makes an appearance at the event via a video call.

Assessment of the Finale

According to Catalán, the resolution provides almost every main character with a happy outcome, though it achieves this ending with an ease that may feel somewhat disappointing. Over five seasons, Outer Banks accumulated numerous enemies, treasures, chases, and conflicts that were wrapped up rapidly in the final chapter.

Despite the swift resolution, the main group survives, JJ remains honored in their memory, and the Pogues achieve their primary goal of securing a shared future without needing to remain on the run.
