Outer Banks concludes its final season on Netflix on August 20, bringing an end to the treasure hunting series and its off screen drama.
The North Carolina based drama follows a group of Pogue teenagers hunting for hidden gold, historic artifacts, a cross and a crown. The crew faced challenges across Barbados and Croatia, battling their wealthy Kook rivals and mourning the tragic death of one of their own.
The cast includes Chase Stokes as John B Routledge, Madelyn Cline as Sarah Cameron, Madison Bailey as Kiara "Kie" Carrera, Rudy Pankow as Jackson "JJ" Maybank, Jonathan Daviss as Pope Heyward and Carlacia Grant as Cleo Anderson. Drew Starkey plays Rafe Cameron and Austin North plays Topper Thornton.
Show creators Shannon Burke, Jonas Pate and Josh Pate planned a five season arc from the start. The trio shared a message on the Outer Banks Instagram account in November 2024 confirming the plan.
"From this beginning, we imagined a mystery that would lead to a five-season journey of adventure, treasure hunting, and friendship," they wrote. "At the time, seven years ago, it seemed impossible that we would really get to tell the whole five season story, but here we are, at the end of our fourth season, still chopping away."
Stokes expressed his support for ending the show on a high note. The 34-year-old actor told People magazine after filming wrapped last December that the role provided a golden opportunity.
"There's just so much gratitude," Stokes said. "I've checked so many boxes that I thought it would span the course of the next 40 years of my career."
Cast shared an apartment building
The actors bonded by living together in a Charleston, South Carolina, apartment complex during the first season. Stokes told Nylon magazine in 2020 that he lived with Pankow. Daviss and North lived a couple doors down, while Cline lived on the floor below.
Bailey lived five minutes away. Stokes described a close bond among the young actors during their early days on set.
"On the weekends everybody would come over, play games, blast music, eat food," Stokes said. "It was kind of this natural organic thing for everybody."
The cast bonded further when Hurricane Dorian forced an evacuation from their Charleston set during the 2019 shoot. "We dipped," Bailey told Elite Daily in 2020, "and went to Asheville, North Carolina."
Stokes rejected John B role
Stokes almost missed his breakout role after initially passing on the script. He told Jimmy Kimmel Live! in 2021 that he thought the concept was too similar to the 1985 film The Goonies.
"I was like, 'That's The Goonies. That's for sure The Goonies. I don't want to destroy that,'" Stokes said. "So I passed on it. And I was like, 'Nope. Not doing that.'"
He auditioned for Topper instead and bombed the reading. Two weeks later, Stokes read the John B script again and changed his mind.
"I immediately was sitting in my borderline-evicted apartment and I was like, 'I made a giant mistake. It's not The Goonies. It's literally not The Goonies,'" he recalled. "And I had fully convinced myself for a month-and-a-half at this point that it's The Goonies."
Real romances and raining kisses
Stokes and Cline took their on screen romance into the real world when they began dating in June 2020. They announced their breakup in November 2021.
The former couple made a pact to prioritize their characters. Stokes told Entertainment Weekly in February 2023 that they promised to honor their work regardless of their personal lives.
"We made a promise to each other before we even started dating that the work was always going to come first," Stokes said. "No matter what happens in our personal lives, and the ways that life sometimes takes you in different directions, that we're always going to honor the work."
Their characters shared an iconic first kiss on a ferry in the rain during season one, which almost did not happen. Cline told Cosmopolitan in May 2020 that the director considered wrapping for the day before the actors pushed for the scene.
"[We] looked at each other," Cline said. "We were all like, 'Let's do it. We gotta do this. This is amazing, this is kismet right now, that is so romantic.'"
The crew agreed, citing a resemblance to the romance film The Notebook. "[The crew] was like, 'Hell yes, we're doing this, full Notebook vibes,'" Cline added. "So we just dedicated the entire day to making sure we did that scene justice."
Off screen drama and animal encounters
Cline faced a frightening moment during season three when co-creator Jonas Pate instructed a rat wrangler to drop a live rat on her head.
"[Co-creator Jonas Pate] was like to our rat wrangler, 'Drop it on her head!'" Cline told The Tonight Show in October 2024. "I was neck deep in water, so I was already freaking out. I looked like an island to the rat who's trying to save itself from drowning, as am I. The rat crawls up and it gets in my hair. I was screaming bloody murder!"
Cline also learned to drive a manual transmission car for the show, despite her character Sarah claiming she cannot drive stick in season two. Netflix shared the detail in a fact sheet obtained by Elite Daily.
The cast faced an emotional goodbye in season three when Charles "Chip" Esten, who played Ward Cameron, left the series following his character's death. Grant told the Netflix platform Tudum in 2023 that Esten became a father figure to the younger actors.
"It was such a long ride back to the hotel, and Chip was just giving us all advice," Grant said. "It was so sad."
Off the set, Pankow defended his girlfriend Elaine Siemek, who worked on the series, from online trolls. He posted on Instagram in August 2021 calling out harassment and false accusations of abuse.
"Accusing someone you don't know of being abusive and manipulative is not ok," Pankow said. "Especially when you don't know the relationship personally."
The couple remained together as the finale dropped in August 2026. Fans also speculated about a feud between Pankow and Bailey after they appeared to use body doubles for a season four finale campfire scene. Bailey responded after the finale by posting an Instagram photo of her male co-stars with the caption "P4L," signaling that the Pogues remain bonded for life.
