The acclaimed documentary chronicling the reunion of Oasis is set to premiere on Disney+ on October 9, following a highly successful theatrical run in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
The film, titled Oasis: Don't Look Back In Anger, gives fans a behind-the-scenes look at the Manchester band's massive Oasis Live 25 world tour. Produced by Magna Studios, the release has already become the highest-grossing documentary of the year so far in the British Isles.
Oasis, formed in Manchester in the early 1990s, became one of the defining bands of the Britpop era with hits like Wonderwall and Don't Look Back In Anger. The group famously split in 2009 following a backstage altercation between brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher in Paris, leading to a fifteen-year estrangement before they announced their monumental reunion tour.
The Oasis Live 25 tour marks the first time the Gallagher brothers will share a stage since their acrimonious split. Demand for tickets caused international ticketing platforms to crash when they went on sale, reflecting the enduring popularity of a band that defined British rock music for a generation.
Exclusive streaming footage
The streaming release will feature exclusive, previously unseen material that was not shown in cinemas. This includes an extended segment from a joint interview with the Gallagher brothers, who sat down in the same room in front of microphones for the project.
Viewers will also see full performances of the classic tracks Wonderwall and Slide Away. Alongside the new documentary, Disney+ is adding several vintage live concerts to its catalogue, including D'You Know What I Mean?, Half The World Away, Oasis: Live by the Sea, and the seminal Blur concert film Blur: Park Live.
The addition of Blur material nods to the famous 1990s chart battle between the two groups, which dominated British tabloids and cemented Britpop as a global cultural movement.
Behind-the-scenes access
Directed by Dylan Southern and Will Lovelace, and produced by Steven Knight, the film combines exclusive access to tour rehearsals and backstage areas with a broader look at the social phenomenon sparked by the band's return.
Southern and Lovelace have previously collaborated on acclaimed music documentaries, bringing a wealth of experience to the project. Their latest film has resonated strongly with critics, securing a 97 percent positive rating on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.
The production features cinematography by Haris Zambarloukos and sound mixing by Academy Award winners James Mather and Tarn Willers, designed to translate the live concert experience directly to home screens.
Global cultural event
Angela Jain, the director of content for Disney+ in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, said that bringing the film to as many viewers as possible through the platform, complete with exclusive unseen footage, is a genuinely exciting prospect for fans.
She added that the return of Oasis has been one of the major cultural events of recent years. According to Jain, the documentary has connected with audiences around the world by celebrating the power of the band and their music through an emotional and evocative story of reunion.
