The lead role is played by Austin Abrams, known for Lone Wolves, Weapons and the TV series The Walking Dead and Euphoria. Rose won a Silver Bear at Berlinale
Rose is set in 17th century Europe, ravaged by the Thirty Years' War. A mysterious soldier arrives in a remote village claiming to be the heir to a neglected estate. Villagers distrust the newcomer, who is hiding a secret: beneath the men's clothing is a woman named Rose, who is willing to do anything, including marrying a local farmer's daughter, to start a new life.
Rose premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival in early 2026, where its star, Oscar nominee Sandra Hüller, won the Silver Bear for Best Actress. Hüller is known for Anatomy of a Fall, The Zone of Interest, Ave Maria and Digger. The film was directed by Austrian filmmaker Markus Schleinzer (Angelo, Michael), who previously worked as a casting director for Michael Haneke and Ulrich Seidl. The script draws on years of research into archival documents and literary works about women in the 16th and 17th centuries who disguised themselves as men; the filmmakers first produced a 1,000-page historical study before drawing the screenplay from it. Austria has confirmed it will submit Rose for the Best International Feature category at the 2027 Academy Awards. The film currently holds a score of 7.6 out of 10 on IMDb, 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, and 88 out of 100 on Metacritic, a rating the site classifies as "universal acclaim".
