Fans of New Girl will have to wait for a screen return after series creator Liz Meriwether denied that scripts have been written for a television reunion, refuting recent statements by actor Max Greenfield.
Meriwether directly contradicted claims made by Greenfield, who portrayed Schmidt across all seven seasons of the sitcom, after he publicly stated that he had read script pages for an upcoming revival.
Greenfield had raised fan expectations at the end of July during an appearance on the morning talk show Today with Jenna and Sheinelle, suggesting that the revival project was well underway. He stated that as far as he knew the show was going to happen, adding that he had read the scripts and found them to be great.
Meriwether firmly rejected those claims during a Los Angeles screening for the first season finale of her new series, Furious. Speaking to Variety, the writer stated flatly that there was no script in existence.
Meriwether took the actor's comments with humor, acknowledging that she has other urgent writing commitments that remain unfinished. She joked that she had not even written the scripts she was actually required to have completed by now.

The comments marked the second time Meriwether had publicly addressed Greenfield's claims. After the actor initially asserted that he had read reunion material, the creator published a comedy video on Instagram to play along with the rumor.
In her video, she began by noting that Greenfield had told everyone she had written incredible scripts for a New Girl reunion, before jokingly inventing that the delay was caused by actors repeatedly demanding script changes.
Meriwether expressed that she was not bothered by the confusion and was enjoying the lighthearted back and forth with the cast. She explained that she was having a great time with the ongoing exchange between herself and the actors.
She suggested that the video clips and crossed messages might be the closest thing to a reunion the series receives. She commented that with how the internet operates today, the short videos they were creating might already constitute the actual reunion.

Greenfield later clarified his comments, explaining that he was actually referring to an off-screen gathering that is scheduled to take place. The cast of New Girl is scheduled to meet in Los Angeles on October 10 for the annual Chrysalis Butterfly Ball.
