Streaming platform Netflix launched the new Swedish crime thriller series Blood Sacrifice on Thursday, August 20, 2026, bringing a Stockholm police murder mystery to global audiences.
The Nordic Noir series, released under the Swedish title Blodsoffer and known in Spanish as Sacrificio de sangre, follows lead detective Thomas Berg as he collaborates with his estranged father to track down a violent killer targeting law enforcement officers.
Set during a Stockholm summer when daylight lasts through the night, the plot begins after emergency dispatchers receive a 911 call reporting a break-in at a summer property in the Stockholm archipelago. Two responding police officers arrive to inspect the isolated home but find no visible intruder. The next day, both officers are discovered dead in a brutal crime, triggering a series of targeted murders directed against members of the police force.
Following a series of internal disagreements with fellow officers, lead detective Thomas Berg is assigned to head the murder investigation. Ordered by superiors to select a partner and resolve the case before another officer is targeted, Thomas chooses his estranged father, retired detective Alfred Berg, turning to the senior investigator's years of operational experience.
Production and creative team
Blood Sacrifice was created by British screenwriter George Kay, who previously created and wrote hit television series including the Netflix heist drama Lupin and the suspense thriller Hijack. Kay co-wrote the screenplay for the new series alongside screenwriters Aron Levander and Emilie Robson.
Danish director Kristoffer Nyholm directed the production. Nyholm is best known for directing the acclaimed Danish crime drama series The Killing and the period drama series Taboo. Production notes describe the project as a classic Nordic Noir thriller that blends procedural crime drama with ethical dilemmas and family conflict under the midsummer sun of the Swedish capital.
Lead cast and character roles
Norwegian actor Jakob Oftebro plays the lead role of detective Thomas Berg, the officer tasked with stopping the police killer. Oftebro is known across Scandinavia for his role as Laust Jensen in the 1864 television series and for portraying explorer Torstein Raaby in the Oscar-nominated 2012 historical drama film Kon-Tiki.
In comments provided to Netflix promotional outlet Tudum, Oftebro said Thomas was a man who had dedicated his life to the police force, but when the attacks began affecting his personal circle, he was forced to face both a brutal killer and his complex relationship with his father. Oftebro added that portraying the detective was a challenging yet rewarding experience, calling the series a story about justice, loyalty, and what happens when the past refuses to stay buried.
Swedish actor Peter Andersson plays Alfred Berg, the estranged father of Thomas and a sharp retired detective recruited to assist his son on the case. Andersson's previous screen credits include roles in the supernatural thriller The Vatican Tapes, the crime series Black Widows, the action film Underworld: Blood Wars, the Millennium film adaptations based on Stieg Larsson's novels, and the true-crime drama series The Unlikely Murderer.
Speaking to Netflix, Andersson said he was drawn to Blood Sacrifice by its strong combination of police procedural mystery and family drama. He noted that playing a police detective felt personal because his real-life son serves as a police officer. Andersson added that he enjoyed working alongside Oftebro as his on-screen son, and expressed excitement for global viewers to discover the series.

South Korean-Swedish singer and musical actress Lisette T. Pagler plays Charlotte Berg, Thomas's wife and the police psychologist tasked with interviewing officers connected to the case.
