Netflix has confirmed that Daisy Jelley and Connor Simos will star in its upcoming screen adaptation of the romance novel Icebreaker. Jelley will play figure skater Anastasia Allen, known as Stassie, while Simos will take on the role of college ice hockey player Nate Hawkins.
The project brings the hit book by author Hannah Grace to the screen as Netflix looks to strengthen its lineup of young adult drama. The streaming platform confirmed the lead casting several months after first revealing that an adaptation of the novel was in development.
Casting for the lead roles
Jelley joins the project with prior experience working alongside the streaming platform. She previously appeared in the Netflix teen drama series Geek Girl and also featured in the British coming of age film How to Have Sex.
For Simos, taking on the role of Nate Hawkins represents a major career milestone. The production will mark his first credited television role.
The two actors will portray dedicated university athletes whose routine lives are upended by circumstance. Stassie is a figure skater who has focused her life on competing at the Olympic Games, while Nate is one of the standout stars of his university hockey team with aspirations of reaching the National Hockey League.
Story and rink conflict
The plot centers on the two athletes after an unexpected accident forces their respective teams to share the same ice rink. The forced arrangement places their tightly scheduled training regimes in direct conflict.
Although both characters begin with clear athletic ambitions and established goals, their mandatory shared schedule becomes complicated when a mutual attraction develops. The story explores the friction between their sporting ambitions, intense competition, and a romance neither athlete expected.
The adaptation forms part of a broader push by Netflix to compete with rival platforms in the lucrative young adult romance space, including popular titles such as Off Campus. Adaptations of teen and new adult novels have become one of the most profitable sources of content for streaming services, with recent titles like Enfrentados: Marfil on Amazon Prime Video demonstrating the strong demand for book to screen adaptations.

Icebreaker was published as the first installment in Hannah Grace's Maple Hills novel series. Following its publication, the romance novel became a global publishing phenomenon, spending 70 consecutive weeks on The New York Times bestseller list.
The book has sold nearly five million copies worldwide. It has also been translated into 24 languages and distributed across 34 territories, establishing a massive international audience ahead of the television adaptation.
With the two main leads now officially cast, Netflix is moving forward with bringing the bestselling Maple Hills universe to viewers worldwide.
