National Geographic has released the trailer for 9/11 Reunited, a three-episode docuseries marking the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The series reunites survivors with the people who helped them escape or saved their lives during the tragedy.
The production will premiere on August 21 on National Geographic and will be available the following day on Disney+ and Hulu. Its release forms part of a special slate of programming created by Disney Entertainment Television for the 25th anniversary of the attacks.
Rather than solely reconstructing the timeline of the event, 9/11 Reunited focuses on the human relationships formed during the emergency. Survivors, firefighters, police officers, healthcare workers, witnesses, and ordinary citizens share their memories and meet with those who played a role in their survival, with some reuniting for the first time since September 11, 2001.
Survivor Reunions and Testimonies
The series gives participants an opportunity to ask questions that have remained unanswered for decades, express their gratitude, and reflect on how the experience changed their lives. In the trailer, one witness stated that someone risked their life to save theirs on that day. Another survivor noted that 25 years had passed and said that without both of their helpers, they never would have made it out.
The project follows National Geographic's tradition of documentaries dedicated to preserving direct accounts of the attacks. In 2021, the channel released 9/11: One Day in America, which featured first-person accounts from survivors and emergency workers in a minute-by-minute reconstruction of events.
The new docuseries shifts attention toward personal connections that made survival possible, offering an intimate perspective on courage, compassion, and resilience. National Geographic collaborated with the 9/11 Memorial & Museum to preserve these accounts for future generations, and the institution will participate in multiple commemorative broadcasts across Disney Entertainment Television.
Anniversary Programming across Networks
9/11 Reunited is part of a broader programming event across ABC News, National Geographic, Disney+, Hulu, ABC News Live, and local ABC-owned stations. The networks stated that the goal is to honor victims and their families, recognize first responders, and highlight community resilience.
The special programming includes an ABC News prime-time special scheduled for September 1, hosted by Michael Strahan. The program will examine how sports, music, media, Broadway, and comedy contributed to the country's emotional recovery. It will premiere on streaming platforms on September 2 and air again on September 11.
Live Coverage and Tributes
Coverage will conclude on September 11 with 9/11 Tribute in Light: Live from Lower Manhattan, hosted by David Muir, Robin Roberts, and Diane Sawyer in partnership with the 9/11 Memorial & Museum. The broadcast will remember victims, survivors, families, and emergency crews, ending with the annual lighting of the tribute above the New York skyline.
Ahead of that event, ABC News Live will broadcast a one-hour special from Ground Zero, hosted by Linsey Davis alongside WABC anchors Sade Baderinwa and Mike Marza.
