A novice climber suffered a knee injury on Mount Shasta in California after his group followed artificial intelligence recommendations and strayed off course into a canyon during a night descent, according to local authorities.
The three beginner mountaineers from Roseville had to spend the night stranded in Mud Creek Canyon before search and rescue crews reached them the following morning, CBS News reported, citing the Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office.

According to a police press release, the three-person group set up camp at an elevation of 2,500 meters on August 29 before making their push toward the summit the next day. The hikers did not reach the peak until 7:00 p.m. local time on August 30, despite safety guidelines recommending that climbers begin their descent no later than noon.
Returning after dark, the men contacted emergency services about an hour into their descent to clarify their route. However, they subsequently lost their way due to directions provided by artificial intelligence and wandered into Mud Creek Canyon. One of the climbers fell during the ordeal and injured his knee, leaving the trio unable to continue moving.
Rescued from the mountain
A rescue team reached the stranded climbers on the morning of August 31. Search personnel then escorted all three hikers down to the trailhead without further incident.
Mount Shasta is a prominent volcanic peak located in Siskiyou County in northern California, rising to an elevation of 14,179 feet above sea level. The mountain is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts and alpine mountaineers, but its steep gullies, loose rock, and sudden weather shifts present severe hazards for inexperienced hikers. Mud Creek Canyon, located on the mountain's southeastern slope, is notorious among local rescuers for steep, unforgiving terrain and heavy glacial runoff debris.
Roseville, a city located in Placer County near Sacramento, lies roughly 200 miles south of the peak. Outdoor safety experts and search agencies frequently warn backcountry hikers that mobile artificial intelligence tools and automated navigation applications can generate inaccurate trail routes or misinterpret rugged wilderness topography, making traditional paper maps and dedicated GPS equipment essential for high-altitude climbs.
The rescue comes shortly after another wilderness incident in the United States, where a man impaled by a trekking pole refused assistance from rescue teams, walking 15 kilometers back to his vehicle on his own.
