The planned movie adaptation of Brandon Sanderson's fantasy novel Mistborn is taking too long in development to cast fan favorite Dafne Keen as Vin.
Sanderson has completed a first draft of the screenplay, but production remains in its early stages with substantial work required before cameras can roll.
The film will adapt The Final Empire, the opening book of the trilogy, which centers on a 15 year old street survivor named Vin. At the start of the story, Vin is extremely thin and appears helpless before discovering her extraordinary magical powers as a Mistborn.
Her dramatic transformation from a vulnerable thief into a central hero drives the narrative, making the lead casting critical to the success of the movie.
Dafne Keen aged out of street thief role
Keen emerged as the top choice among readers in recent years following her breakout work in the superhero film Logan and the Star Wars series The Acolyte. Commentators noted she would have been an ideal fit for Vin half a decade ago when her age aligned closely with the character.
The actress is now 21 years old, creating a wide age gap between her and the teenage protagonist described in the books. Although feature adaptations frequently age up young leads, continued production delays will push Keen even further outside the necessary age bracket.
Industry observers point out that waiting another year or two for principal photography to start means other young contenders currently discussed by fans will also grow too old for the part.
Unknown actress likely for lead role
Producers are expected to search for a lesser known talent to play Vin, copying the strategy used for the Twilight film franchise. When Kristen Stewart was cast as Bella Swan at 17 years old, she was not yet a global star.
By contrast, filmmakers may target a high profile actor for the role of Kelsier, the charismatic veteran thief who serves as Vin's mentor and leads the rebellion.
Published in 2006, The Final Empire established Sanderson as a major voice in modern epic fantasy. The novel takes place in the ash-covered world of Scadrial, where an immortal ruler has governed for a thousand years and magical Allomancers burn metals to gain supernatural strength, speed, and heightened senses.
The story forms the foundation of Sanderson's broader Cosmere universe, an interconnected fantasy cosmos spanning multiple book series. Keen, a British and Spanish actress who also starred in His Dark Materials, remains active in major film franchises despite missing out on the Mistborn role.
Development on the feature adaptation continues as Sanderson refines the script alongside production partners, with official casting announcements for Vin and Kelsier expected once a filming schedule is locked.
