Actor Matt Smith is in negotiations to appear on the upcoming official Doctor Who podcast, potentially reuniting him with his former co-stars.
The British actor has not returned to the long-running science fiction series in more than a decade since stepping down from the lead role. However, he is currently in discussions to participate in an upcoming official podcast project tied to the franchise.
Podcast Reunion Plans
During a recent interview, actors Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill revealed that they asked Smith to join them on the upcoming official Doctor Who podcast. Gillan and Darvill starred alongside Smith as companions Amy Pond and Rory Williams during his tenure on the BBC series.
Darvill said cast members have already spoken directly with Smith about the appearance. He noted that securing Smith's involvement might simply be a matter of coordinating work schedules, adding that the actor only needed to confirm his availability.
If scheduling permits, organisers plan to record the specific podcast episode in person. Former Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat has already been confirmed to participate in the podcast initiative. Moffat served as executive producer and head writer from 2010 to 2017, overseeing the eras of both Smith and successor Peter Capaldi.
Career Beyond the TARDIS
Smith took over the lead role from David Tennant in 2010, debuting as the Eleventh Doctor in the fifth season of the revived series. He starred in the show for several series before handing over the TARDIS key to Capaldi. Subsequent seasons featured Jodie Whittaker and Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor.
Unlike Tennant, who has made high-profile returns to the franchise, Smith has never reprised his role on screen since his departure. Instead, he built a career across major film and television franchises.
Following his departure from Doctor Who, Smith starred as Prince Philip in the Netflix drama The Crown and portrayed Daemon Targaryen in the HBO fantasy series House of the Dragon. His film credits include roles in the Terminator franchise, and he is set to play the primary villain in the film Star Wars: Starfighter.
