Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has revealed that the upcoming superhero crossover film Avengers: Secret Wars will center its story on Doctor Doom. Writing in a new foreword for a re-release of the comic book Secret Wars, Feige confirmed that the entire narrative will be built around the villain played by actor Robert Downey Jr., according to news site The Direct.
Feige said the filmmakers will draw elements from various comic storylines to construct the project. He explained that aspects of the original Secret Wars comic narrative, in which Doctor Doom served as a primary character, are set to become a vital part of the new film.
In his foreword, Feige noted that Marvel is building toward its own cinematic universe version of the comic storyline. He compared the creative process to the character Loki gathering branches of the timeline at the end of all things. Feige wrote that the studio will take threads from the original comic and weave a new story inspired by Marvel's screen and comic history, bringing beloved characters together in moments fans have long wanted to see.
Feige also referred to Doctor Doom as the greatest villain in Marvel universe history. Marvel Studios has developed the Marvel Cinematic Universe since 2008 into the highest-grossing film franchise in history. Downey Jr., who previously anchored the franchise as Iron Man before concluding his portrayal in 2019, returns to Marvel in this new role as the iconic antagonist.
Upcoming Crossover Films
Avengers: Secret Wars is scheduled to open in global movie theaters in December 2027. The project is designed to partially reboot the Marvel Cinematic Universe, creating a simpler and more accessible storyline for viewers.
Before that release, Marvel will launch another major crossover picture titled Avengers: Doomsday, which is scheduled to premiere on December 18. That preceding film will feature the Avengers, the X-Men, and the Fantastic Four joining forces to combat Doctor Doom ahead of the events of Secret Wars.
