A Nova Scotia court has fully acquitted Brandon Claimi, 30, after he served a year and a half in a Canadian prison for child sexual exploitation crimes he did not commit, People reported. The wrongful conviction turned on a one-character difference in a messaging app username.
Police arrested Claimi in February 2020, alleging that between August and December 2018 he had communicated with a 12-year-old girl on the messaging app Kik, receiving explicit photographs from her and soliciting sexual acts. A court found him guilty, and he was sentenced in January 2024 to one and a half years in prison.
Claimi served his full sentence before the error came to light. It emerged that police had confused two nearly identical usernames on the platform. The actual perpetrator had used the Kik handle fus__ro_dah, which features two consecutive underscores between the syllables "fus" and "ro." Claimi's handle was fus_ro_dah, with only a single underscore in that position. Not one participant in the court proceedings is reported to have noticed the discrepancy before Claimi was convicted and imprisoned.
Seeking Compensation
Claimi's lawyer said that following the ordeal, his client had lost all faith in the justice system. Claimi is now pursuing financial compensation for his wrongful imprisonment. The real perpetrator is believed to be in California and is still being sought by authorities.
