Actor Maitreyi Ramakrishnan clarified her stance on her Never Have I Ever character Devi Vishwakumar being dead during an interview at Netflix's End of Summer Bash.
Speaking to reporters Jennie Ekpa and Brahmjot Kaur for E! News on Aug. 13, the 24-year-old actor stated that while she maintains the teen character passed away following the fourth season finale, she has not entirely ruled out a future return.
Ramakrishnan emphasized that any prospective return to the character would require specific conditions to align before she would consider stepping back into the role.
She told E! News: "She's dead. I'm not saying this to give anyone hope - don't do selective listening right now, viewers at home - if the right script and the right time in everyone's life occurred and all the stars lined up, sure. But that hasn't happened yet."
She added: "I don't foresee it happening anytime soon."
The series was created by writer and producer Mindy Kaling as a coming-of-age comedy following an overzealous high school student navigating adolescence and grief. Ramakrishnan explained that her perspective comes from a deep respect for the show, which achieved historical significance in the young adult television genre.
"I just love Devi so much," Ramakrishnan said. "I truly am a fan of the show. I would never want to do anything that compromises the beautiful story that we made, that truly made history in the YA genre, but was also a really heartfelt story that means a lot to people."
She added: "I don't want to rush into another version of the story for a check because I really love Devi and everyone involved with the show. I want to do it right. So that's my way of encapsulating that all into: 'So Devi's dead.'"
Maitreyi Ramakrishnan Projects
Ramakrishnan is set to star in the upcoming Netflix feature film Best of the Best, which premieres on Sept. 18.
Following her portrayal of high school life in Sherman Oaks, California, Ramakrishnan is moving to a Seattle setting to join the cast of the series Elle for its second season. She will appear alongside lead actor Lexi Minetree, who portrays the titular character Elle Woods.
Ramakrishnan described her upcoming role as Sam Reed, saying: "Sam Reed is the evil doppelganger to Elle Woods - evil, but a doppelganger. Same, same, but different. I will stir up the pot. A lot, a lot of things will happen."
