Singer Madonna has published a series of photographs from her summer vacation in Greece, capturing family moments and a private visit to a Meteora monastery.
Although her trip ended several days ago, the 68-year-old American pop artist shared the personal photo diary with her millions of Instagram followers alongside a message stating that her holiday mood was over.
The images document her travels across Corfu, Patmos, and Meteora, a UNESCO World Heritage site in central Greece known for its dramatic rock formations and medieval Eastern Orthodox monasteries perched atop high sandstone cliffs. Among the photographs was a snapshot from the Holy Monastery of Varlaam, the second-largest monastery in the complex, where Madonna engaged in a quiet conversation with the abbot, Archimandrite Father Benediktos Zacharakis. In the Eastern Orthodox Church, an archimandrite is a senior monastic priest appointed to supervise a monastery.
The meeting occurred on August 14 after the monastery had closed to the public for the day. Madonna toured the historic site, examined its ancient wall frescoes, and asked detailed questions regarding Orthodox Christian theology and monastic life.
Speaking to the Greek religious newspaper Orthodoxi Alitheia, Father Benediktos revealed that the singer appeared very different from her public media persona. He described her as a simple and accessible individual, noting that she behaved like any ordinary person.
The two sat together in the monastery guest room for an extended discussion. Father Benediktos recalled that Madonna showed a deep interest in prayer, the concept of soul salvation, and the traditional woolen prayer rope he held during their talk.
During their meeting, the abbot explained that one of the shortest and most central prayers in Orthodox tradition is the petition asking the Lord Jesus Christ for mercy. He added that the singer raised numerous metaphysical questions before expressing regret that she could not remain longer at the monastery.
Sacred Art and Revelation
The photographic collection also featured a rare religious icon depicting the Vision of the Apocalypse of Saint John, associated with the collection at the Monastery of the Apocalypse on Patmos. Located in the Aegean Sea, the island of Patmos is celebrated in Christian history as the refuge where Saint John the Theologian lived in exile. The monastery complex surrounds the sacred cave where tradition holds that John dictated the Revelation to his disciple Prochorus.
The icon visualizes the opening chapter of the Book of Revelation, rendering Jesus Christ with hair as white as wool or snow. A sharp two-edged sword emerges from his mouth, while he holds seven stars in his right hand and stands among seven golden lampstands.
According to the biblical text, the seven stars represent the angels of the seven churches of Asia Minor, while the lampstands represent the churches themselves. An inscription across the upper portion of the painting states that he is the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. Time and candle smoke have darkened the wood over the centuries, giving the artwork an imposing appearance.
Island Traditions and Family Travel
Alongside her spiritual inquiries in Meteora and Patmos, the images capture Madonna relaxing on the island of Corfu with her children and her partner, Akeem Morris. Located off the northwestern coast of Greece in the Ionian Sea, Corfu is famous for its Venetian architecture, lush landscapes, and distinct folk customs.
In one snapshot, the singer posed in accessories inspired by traditional female island attire, specifically the Koronistra costume of Corfu. The outfit featured a large floral headpiece, expanding on earlier posts in which she shared videos of traditional Greek music, folk dancing, and local island festivities.
Preparation for the Music Awards
Her statement that her holiday mood was over appears to signal a return to her professional commitments. Reports indicate she is preparing for a major performance at the MTV Video Music Awards, scheduled for September 27 in Los Angeles, though event organizers have not officially confirmed her stage appearance. Established in 1984 by the music television channel MTV, the annual awards ceremony honors achievements in the music video medium.
Madonna leads all nominees at this year's VMAs with 11 nominations, including top categories such as Video of the Year, Artist of the Year, and Song of the Year. The annual ceremony holds a long connection with the artist following her performance of Like a Virgin at the inaugural broadcast.
