Lionsgate develops new Leprechaun movie with Saw writers

Film production company Lionsgate has begun developing a remake of the famous horror movie Leprechaun, according to a report from Deadline. The release date for the upcoming film is currently unknown.

Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan will write the screenplay for the project. The duo wrote the horror franchise The Collector and several installments in the Saw film series.

Previous reboot attempt

The new film represents the second attempt by Lionsgate to reboot the franchise. Director Felipe Vargas, known for Substance: Family Nightmare, was previously attached to direct a reboot, but that picture never reached full production.

The original comedy horror movie Leprechaun was released in 1993. The story follows a playful and evil leprechaun who kills anyone who steals his pot of gold. The film gained worldwide popularity and produced seven sequels.
