We bring you an unprecedented scene from “La maternal”, the new movie by Pilar Palomero

Pilar Palomero made an impression with her debut film “Las niñas”in one of the most difficult moments for cinema, the year 2020. Despite the context, the film was a great success, which collected numerous awards and recognitions, including 4 Goya Awards (Best Picture, Best New Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best Cinematography), making history by becoming the first director to win Best New Director and Best Picture for the same project.

Palomero’s gaze brings us this time a drama that tells the story of Carla, a 14-year-old girl who lives with her young single mother in an old roadhouse on the outskirts of a city. Carla’s life changes completely when the social worker realizes it that she is five months pregnant, at which point she enters “La Maternal”., a center for underage mothers where she shares her daily life with other young women in the same situation. Together with their babies, they will face this new adult world for which they have not had time to prepare.

The portrait of this defiant and rebellious young woman summarizes a complex and exciting story. According to the producers Valérie Delpierre and Alex Lafuente, “Only from her gaze could Pilar subtly depict these realities and above all seek the light through characters who need help and find them happy in this foster home thanks to the coexistence between adolescents and the support of educators”.

Up-and-coming director Pilar Palomero also serves as the film’s screenwriter, delving into the complexities of teenage motherhood, and tells us how she was inspired to create the script: “A few years ago I had the chance to see a shelter for teenage mothers with my own eyes. Meeting with the director of the center led to long and emotional conversations with women who, from their adult perspective, told me what it had been like. as for them. They live an early motherhood. And from those conversations came La Maternal, a film that deals with the complexities of being a teenager and a mother at the same time; a light and dark, joyful and painful, tender and hard portrait , in which I mainly wants to convey the strength, heroic resilience and inexhaustible perseverance of María, Sheila, Estel, Jamila, Claudia and all the women who have inspired this story.” This story shows a reality without judging it and empathizing with the characters, who mimic situations that occur in the world outside fiction and that many young people face.

The film is produced by Barrixica AIE, Inicia Films, BteamProds and has the collaboration of RTVE, TVC, Aragón TV and Movistar. The premiere in theaters is this Friday, November 18 and lasts 120 minutes. From Marie Claire we got access to an unpublished scene from the movie which we leave below:
