Since the 14th century, the title Princess of Wales has been used by the consorts of the Princes of Wales. However, this is a courtesy title.

Kate and William also became the Dukes and Duchess of Cornwall, retaining the Duchy of Cambridge, meaning their children are also “Cambridge of Cornwall”.

Kate, formerly known as the Duchess of Cambridge, will now hold the titles Duchess of Cornwall and Princess of Wales, the first member of the Royal family to hold the title after Princess Diana.

A royal source said the new Princess of Wales “appreciates the history of this role but understandably wants to look to the future as she creates her own path”.

The royal source said: “The couple focus on building the trust and respect of the Welsh people over time.

“The Prince and Princess of Wales will approach their roles in the same humble and unpretentious way they approached their business before.”

Meanwhile, the change of monarch led to other title changes around the royal family.

William also inherited the Scottish titles Duke of Rothesay, Earl of Carrick, Baron of Renfrew, Lord and Prince of the Isles, and Grand Steward of Scotland.

The duchy would be handed over to Edward in 1999 after Buckingham Palace announced that his father would take his place “when the time came”, with the blessings of both his parents.

It is currently unclear whether the titles of Lady Louise Mountbatten-Windsor and James Mountbatten-Windsor, Viscount Severn will change.

This may be because their father, Prince Edward, held the title of Duke of Edinburgh.

In 2021, it was reported that Prince Charles was considering giving or suspending the title to Edward.

If Edward inherited the Edinburgh title, it would pass to his son James, Viscount Severn, who grew up expecting a life outside of the royal family.

Instead, he was awarded the title Earl of Wessex by the Queen after he married Sophie Rhys-Jones that same year.

However, after Prince Philip passed away in April 2021, at the age of 99, the title was transferred to VI in 1947.

Last year, Charles reportedly decided whether to give the title to Edward, another member of his family, or suspend him.

He was said to be considering keeping his 1999 promise while assessing his own future. Said the Sunday Times.

A source told the publication: “The Prince is the Duke of Edinburgh as he stands now and what happens to his title is up to him. Not to Edward.

And another said, ‘Edinburgh will not go to them (Wessex) like the prince.’ said.

The title of Duke of Edinburgh will merge with the crown after Charles ascends the throne, meaning it can be reassigned to Edward.

The initial decision to award Edward the title was made in recognition of his work and dedication to the Duke of Edinburgh Award, of which he is a trustee, as well as chairman of the Duke of Edinburgh International Award.

Philip was the sixth, including the two Dukes of Gloucester and Edinburgh, to hold the title of Duke of Edinburgh.

If Edward inherited the Edinburgh title, it would pass to his son James, Viscount Severn, who grew up expecting a life outside of the royal family.
