How do you learn to understand dreams and recognize whether they are prophetic or not?

Let’s be honest – each of us at least once googled what exes dream of from Thursday to Friday. And if after this dream he sent you a light to your story, congratulations – the dream was prophetic. But without jokes, dreams, that is, their meaning, are still one of the main objects of research in psychology and oneirology. Experts examine the images seen in dreams in detail and come up with theories about what they can be associated with.

In general, people fall into two categories: someone refers to dreams as a true “out-of-body” experience of the soul, and believes that he travels and remembers his adventures, and someone directly compares dreams with real experiences that torment a person. person for a long time.

About what human dreams mean and whether they are harbingers of the future, we decided to deal with the psychologist from the Yasno service Marina Volkova and the author of the modern dream book Magicum Victoria Sokolova.

From a psychology perspective, dreams reflect our experiences. Dream stories are often associated with emotionally significant events or images from the past and suppressed anxiety is released through nightmares. It is a mysterious indication of what is happening in our psyche, encoded with symbols and metaphors. It is no accident that Sigmund Freud called dreams the royal road to the unconscious.

In his seminal work, The Interpretation of Dreams, Freud identifies several of the universal themes we most often encounter in dreams.

Nudity. We wear dressing gowns in public and we don’t feel any emotion or shame. This image can be associated with childish sexuality – in childhood the child enjoys his own nudity, but as he grows older he has to hide it more and more. The desire to have fun meets the constraints of society.

The death of loved ones. Maybe one day you really wished for the death of a dreaming relative. It sounds eerie, but Freud makes it clear: Such thoughts may have arisen in the distant past, but their traces can still be traced back to consciousness through a dream even years later. For example, brothers and sisters often experience jealousy and envy towards each other, resulting in hatred. In adulthood, they are likely to improve relationships, but the former accusation of anger can splash out in a dream. But dreams about death are not necessarily associated with anything destructive. Sometimes they speak of global internal changes and the “rebirth” of the individual.

Push-up. Anxious dreams in which you pull out an unlearned ticket are often associated with memories of childhood punishments for misbehavior and fear that this unpleasant experience could happen again.

At the same time, psychoanalysts agree that dreams cannot be interpreted unambiguously. Do not trust dream books that describe certain meanings of images. They are often based on the personal imagination of the authors, not on the archetypes and symbols found in culture.

The deep meaning of a dream should be sought, starting not only from the archetypal symbols found in fairy tales, legends and myths, but also from its connotations associated with a person’s personal history. What we see in dreams is only indirectly related to reality – these images accumulate our emotional experience. This is how the personal meets the collective unconscious. And instead of trying to decipher the meaning of a dream “literally”, it is worth reflecting on the connection of images from dreams with our intrapsychic life.

Dreams whose events occur later in real life are called prophetic. True, they are often confused with mental repetitions where a person who had some emotional experiences the day before saw them in their dreams. So I hasten to upset those who see themselves as an oracle after receiving a bag they once dreamed of.

Anyone who pays attention to what happens to him can learn to understand his dreams. Of course, most of the symbols in dreams are common, and it is quite possible to use dream books to decipher them. True, it should be borne in mind that most of them are only features from symbol encyclopedias. But still there are general details of what will happen to a person in the future. For example, if in a dream you see people from the past, a meeting with them is likely in the future. And if you often have dreams without distorted symbols, it means that you clearly know your desires.

In general, it is up to you to believe in Freud’s dream book or Miller’s dream book. No one can condemn you for this, at least because not a single theory has yet been proven that they cannot be trusted. Yes, and we’d be lying if we said we didn’t google who your dream boyfriend wanted to date. The most important thing to remember is that if you’re having nightmares that haunt you every day, it’s time to turn to the experts.
