Pride Day is coming around the world as people of all countries proudly celebrate LGBTQ+ Rights Month. The acronym LGBTQIA, with the addition of other letters, comes from English and means “Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersexual and Asexual”. The term originally originated from a collective movement to combat discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. And this problem still holds true in some countries where same-sex sexual orientation is still discriminated against.
Pride Month is marked by numerous parties and events, most notably the Pride parades. So if you decide to take a city break this summer and take the opportunity to visit one of the Pride events, now you know where to go… The latest study from Holidu, the vacation rental search engine , presents us the best cities to enjoy these celebrations… Pay attention!
London
The British capital, London, came out on top this year with an overall score of 38.67/50, making it the most LGBTQ-friendly city in Europe. London reached the maximum score of 10 in both the popularity on Instagram and the “LGBTQ-friendly bars” category. In terms of equality, the UK is already very ahead in a European comparison with a score of 8.2. The metropolis is also a forerunner in terms of accessibility and has achieved a score of 9.12. The only downside is the price of the accommodation per night: with an average of 289 euros per night, visitors have to pull their wallets for their stay. The big London Pride parade will take place on Saturday 2 July 2022, which this year celebrates its 50th anniversary in the United Kingdom.
berlin
The German capital also climbs on the podium and takes the silver medal in the standings. Compared to London, Berlin pays only half the price for housing, but the competition in this category is very strong: the German capital scores only 2.79. When it comes to “accessibility”, Berlin is just behind London, with a score of 9.30 out of 10. With over 60 bars catering to LGBTQ people, the capital is also one of the best-behaved in Europe in this category. The Christopher Street Day in Berlin, or Berlin Pride Parade, returns this year on July 23, 2022, after a hiatus due to the pandemic. But there are already plenty of smaller rallies, street festivals and events starting in June.
Hamburg
Another German city has entered the top 5: Hamburg is in third place with an overall score of 27.32. Among other things, Hamburg scores well in the accessibility category (score: 7.98) and the Hanseatic city also delivers a good result in terms of LGBTQ-friendly bars, confirming that major German cities are very open to the LGBTQ community. This year’s Pride Week runs from July 30 to August 7. The highlight is the Christopher Street Day demonstration on August 6.
Amsterdam
The capital of the Netherlands is in fourth place in the ranking, with an overall score of 27.22. In the Netherlands, LGBTQ equality stands out, with the highest score in the top 5. The Pride Amsterdam starts on July 30 and ends on August 7, 2022.
Most LGTBQ+ cities in Spain
We cannot leave this study without taking a look at the best cities to live the Pride celebrations in Spain, and despite not being in the Top 5, our country is one of the most desired destinations among the LGTBQ+ group. Among the most in-demand cities, we find Madrid in first place and seventh at European level.
Despite Spain’s capital having a somewhat high average price to stay in a holiday rental (€199) on average, we can classify it as the best destination as it has a large number of gay-friendly bars and locations. Likewise, there are many events registered in the city. And finally the acceptance of the LGTBQ+ group in the city, and the fact is that the city is considered an open and cosmopolitan city that welcomes all groups. In second place we find Barcelona, with data very similar to the Spanish capital, with the only difference that the price of accommodation in this case rises significantly, with an average of € 294 per night.
Third on the Spanish podium, we have Maspalomas, a destination that has recently established itself as a benchmark LGTBQ+ destination across Europe. Finally, we can also find destinations such as Torremolinos, Valencia, Sitges or Palma de Mallorca that close the Spanish ranking.
