How new Russian dramas explore sex: From Happy End to Amore More

When The Kept Women was released three years ago, it looked very daring – the number of explicit scenes per 40-minute episode exceeded all the norms implied in the Russian drama industry at the time. Meanwhile, streaming sites like Netflix and HBO were already getting millions of views on Sex Education, Elite and Euphoria talking about sex and showing what it is. Suddenly, they stopped making a scene from it, and at some point, rather, the absence of sex began to seem something strange (as in ordinary life). Not because everything was filmed under the age limit of 18+, but because the show started treating sex as real. This is no longer an embellished picture in which everything is in beautiful and muted colors, but a banal part of almost every adult’s daily life. After Hollywood, home cinema has also crossed its sexual barrier, and many daring projects have appeared on the screens: what is a sensational Happy Ending about the webcam or Amore More – this year’s premiere about the value of polyamory? Somewhere sex was almost one of the main driving forces of the plot, somewhere it was the main theme of the project, but there were definitely a lot of it.

In an interview with Daria Moroz, the star of the same “Women in Retained” and then another candid series “The Happiness Clinic,” we discussed such a drastic sexual revolution and she said: “It seems to me that this is the first time this has happened with open access to the Internet. is connected in order. And, of course, it would be strange if the cinema continued to be silent on these issues. We show people that they have a body, they don’t just worry about annoying questions, all people have passions, complexes and hidden desires – it’s part of our life.

Happy End’s director, Evgeny Sangadzhiev, confirms his words in an interview with Forbes: “We actually fooled everybody: everybody thinks our project is about porn, but that’s not the case at all. Erotic scenes, which we do not have, are part of the lives of the heroes, nothing more.” Of course, there was always sex in the cinema, including in Russian (and even in the 60s, such scenes could honestly compete with modern ones), but they showed it in different ways: for example, in the 20s of the XX century. , was included in the plot to show what kind of conditional bottom a woman can fall to “solve the damn housing problem” (“Girl with a Box”, 1927) or “make money for a cow” (“Katka”). – paper wound”, 1926) and already in The World of Alexander Dovzhenko (1930), the nude scene is devoid of any sexual tension and is added to emphasize the degree of helplessness of the main character after the death of her husband. At different times, sex was shown simply as rape, prostitution, or the only possible form of intercourse (“There is no love, there is only sex,” say the protagonists of the documentary film “Die from Love”, 1990) . And then they just stopped raising it to a shocking level – and here in Pyotr Buslov’s “Boomer”, sex is shown between time to reveal the character, and in Alexei Balabanov’s “It Doesn’t Hurt Me” it’s the usual plot.

It seems like they’ve learned to talk very freely about sex on screen by the time they’re just 10 years old – they’re finally discussing it, and these aren’t vulgar conversations about role-playing games between characters as part of their relationship development. , but an honest dialogue with the audience about the body and how to use it . The directors also found a common language with her, and in “Kept Women” Konstantin Bogomolov does not rob all the heroes just for the sake of a bold picture: “We have never had sex in the frame for the sake of such sex. All such scenes somehow reveal characters – reveal characters, that is, we show ourselves not only in dialogues, but also physically, as in life. Our sex scenes are always dramatic, just told in a different language, ”says Daria Moroz in our interview. And the Happy Ending simply flirts with the viewer, pretending to be a “series about the webcam industry”, where in fact the adult videos simply activate the whole dramaturgy of the series and allow to reveal the central theme – the impossibility of normal love.

This year’s astonishing dominance of everything imaginable with the “obviously” prefix is ​​reflected in Amore More, the first Russian drama about polygamy (or freelance relationships). And it seems that it is not even a surprise anymore, and therefore the TV series industry in Russia has a new challenge: how to talk about sex in a way that is also fresh? After all, the public seems to be demanding demonstrations again.
