Knowledge transfer: 5 life hacks from successful artists on how to improve your drawing skills

Everyone’s childhood was divided into three categories: music school, dance and art. And if everything is clear with the first two options: the teachers tried to improve the technique, taught us how to hold our hands correctly and behave on stage, then in art schools teachers paid more attention to the “liveliness” of the fruit and the ability of the picture to “breathe” (whatever that means). . But it is precisely thanks to such demands that artists learn to develop their own style and style of writing, to understand the trends of art and to benefit from advice in their professional activities.

It is worth noting that art has now moved beyond the canvas and is firmly established in the digital space. In the publications of banned (and not so banned) social networks, we can increasingly see sketches, drawings and full-fledged paintings made not with pencils and erasers, but with the help of tablets. We’d be lying if we said we weren’t excited about the shift to the digital space, as artists (both beginners and professionals) now have a variety of apps to hone their skills. One of these was GoPaint of the Huawei brand.

GoPaint chips

Realism. More than 150 brush types are available in the application, which the company developed together with the Chinese Academy of Arts to recreate ink, oil and watercolor effects.

Like paper. GoPaint is equipped with the latest paper simulation feature that allows users to customize the canvas to suit their artistic style, changing the degree of transparency, brightness, level of detail and scale.

Everything is in one place. Color maps, editing capabilities, instant creation of ideal shapes – the application contains everything necessary for both beginners and advanced artists to engage solely in creativity, without being distracted by the technical side of the matter.

Ease. More precisely, it uses the Fantian drawing engine, 8K canvases and many layers, with which you can “animate” the drawings.

High frame rate. GoPaint reduces heavy usage load (e.g. when painting on a large canvas or using multiple layers) by 70%. This technology allows you to increase the frame rate up to 120 FPS, providing a smoother and more enjoyable drawing process.

Having covered the technical side of the topic, we decided to go further and asked contemporary artists Gleb Solntsev and Lena Marra to share their experiences and give five simple but effective life tips for those who want to learn drawing from scratch or improve their skills. abilities. Spoiler: in this material we will do without “live” fruits.

Seeking references isn’t always a bad thing, especially when we’re talking about emerging artists. You can even start by copying the works of authors you like and using their techniques in your own works. The important thing is to do this thoughtfully and ask yourself questions: what color, what line, what filters and brushes are used?

Create a separate folder containing your favorite works. These can be paintings, photographs or film stills. Then gradually move your best illustrations there and review them, recording your initial feelings when encountering your work: how different they are and what could be improved.

Try all the tools that interest you. Don’t be afraid to experiment with brushes, filters or layers. Use their abilities as much as possible. You can even try tracing photos (portraits, architecture, etc.) and analyzing anatomy, shadows, and details. In the end, you should get a meaningful drawing, not a copy.

For example, it can be a non-standard composition, a combination of colors or shapes. Even if at first glance such a drawing may seem “wrong”, you should not give up on what you started; It is better to look for options in which the picture will play differently, for example, by shifting the layers relative to each other.

Find a topic that will inspire you to study again and again. If the subject deeply affects the writer, he will look for new solutions by improving technique and composition.

And we have good news for anyone who is already inspired to create. The GoPaint competition has started again this year. This time the creators decided to turn to nature and draw inspiration from it. So you can safely pick up the pen and apply all the life hacks. Applications will be accepted until December 31, all details are on our website.
