American migrant says bagels in Australia are sad and heavy

An American expat has revealed the “sad” truth about life in Australia that he “doesn’t want to do”.

Using @coffeeenut online, TikToker Ashleigh moved from New York to Tasmania for college and noticed that Down Under bagels taste different than they do in the US.

In a short video, he said: “Things that didn’t make much sense to an American who just moved to Australia: bagels, keep it that way.”

She claims her Australian bagels are “so sad and intense,” but she loves the coffee culture.

TikToker Ashleigh moved from New York to Tasmania for college and realized that Down Under’s bagels were not the same as in the US.

In the United States, bagels are a popular breakfast option, often topped with cream cheese and butter.

But Australians prefer bacon and spring rolls or avocado on toast with a morning coffee over a bagel.

The short video has since gone viral and has been viewed 1.2 million times with hundreds of comments.

One woman asked Ashleigh how much she liked Australian coffee and she said, “Australian coffee is much better than most Americans.”

Some expats agreed, saying they have a hard time finding decent bagels in their city, but others said Melbourne and Perth are full of bakeries selling delicious bagels.

“Melbourne is full of bagel shops, some suburbs have a high Jewish population with great family bakeries!” one person wrote.

“As an Australian who has visited America many times, you are right! You make bagels better,” another wrote.

Despite the differences between the United States and Down Under, Ashleigh said she made a “good choice” to go international.

In other videos, Ashleigh said she’s also confused by parking signs and outlets in Australia.
