A new disease: crypto addiction. What is it and how is it treated?

A new disease: crypto addiction. What is it and how is it treated?

“Luxury rehabs started to cure crypto addiction” – thanks to this screaming headline from the news, we learned a whole story that a new phenomenon of psychological addiction has emerged.

That’s how it was in the beginning – NFT, crypto, bitcoins seemed like just another Tamagotchi toy. It wasn’t possible to give him enough attention and he died, depriving us of the pocket money we spent to buy him. Later, this hobby turned into a real empire (now we understand that this is an evil empire), by the way, it is even advertised by Hollywood stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Paris Hilton, Ashton Kutcher and others. Thanks to them, many people around the world not only gained (or lost) wealth, but also fell victim to the crypto addiction, which psychologists now compare to gambling.

True, it is worth noting in advance that this does not apply to all players on the digital exchange. With a competent approach, of course, you can increase your bank account, but now we are not talking about this, but a disease that is scaling and at risk of epidemic (of course we doubt the latter).

The term “cryptodependency” and the phenomenon of its origin are confusing because we had no idea that financial transactions could lead to rehabilitation. But as clinical psychologist Polina Kashapova says, it’s all about the characteristics of the human brain.

Polina Kashapova – clinical psychologist, psychotherapist from Germany

“If we talk about the development of addiction, it is important to understand that the human brain is extremely prone to developing addictive behavior due to its complexity and structural features. This refers to the banal fact of the existence of a pleasure center and the entire limbic system as a whole, as well as to the principles by which connections are formed in the brain. Roughly speaking, what gives me pleasure is logical and this link needs to be fixed.

It is important to note that the crypt itself is neutral. We’re talking about addiction to his action, to the effect I’m getting.

Therefore, addiction can be from anything: food, shopping, watching videos, playing various kinds of games, smartphones and social media, work, sex, etc.

They equate crypto addiction with gambling, as psychotherapist Polina Kashapova explains, because the principles of the game and the workings of digital shopping are similar:

“For example, a digital exchange works around the clock, so I can make money from it whenever I want. Sleep turned out to be dangerous, this is the weak link. A big plus if I stay awake for a few hours, and a minus if I sleep. The same goes for gambling addiction, where I can go to a casino whenever I want or, at worst, play online.”

If we talk about the impact and dependence of the action, this hypothesis is also confirmed by Maxim Yantsen, whose activities are directly related to cryptocurrency.

Maxim Yantsen owns the crypto business.

“Addiction can occur, especially if you are monetizing crypto.

As soon as you’re in the dark, you want more, and then you want more. Until you lose everything and wake up in a European clinic where you are being treated for crypto addiction.

I have friends who have made investments, they’ve been thrown all over the place, and now they’re hiding from creditors. Others took all their possessions.”

By the way, about the risks. The internet is full of stories documenting the huge financial gains some lucky people have made from trading cryptocurrencies. However, people are at least shy about talking about frequent losses. At least somehow talk about the risks of only indirect heroes or observers of such stories.

Alexander Ivanov (name and surname changed at the request of the hero)

“Unfortunately, I know of several cases where people lost all their wealth due to cryptocurrencies. Like any investment business, cryptocurrency is not guaranteed to be successful, and sometimes the market can be very volatile. Therefore, it is important to be prepared for the loss of your investment and not invest more in crypto than you can afford to lose.”

Gennady Avramov

“I had a colleague who never took his phone away from him. And this is despite the fact that we have a rather traumatic job. He was constantly walking around with his phone, his constant attention was on it, and he spent all his free time on the smartphone. Even his superiors pointed out the problem to him, but it had no effect, so he was on the verge of being fired. Later it turned out that he monitors the course of the cellar and actively invests in it. Of course, I doubt there was a lot of money out there because wages didn’t allow for it, but the unhealthy behavior was obvious. Unfortunately, I can’t tell him what happened now, he left his previous job.

One of the first to start therapy in this direction, psychotherapist Chris Byrne, who treats crypto addiction at Scottish clinic Castle Craig, also talks about the fluctuations in the digital market that contributed to attracting a “sick” player to crypto. :

“The high-risk, volatile cryptocurrency market – all this attracts a troubled player. Because it’s a classic “bubble” situation (“economic bubble” is a term based on the soap bubble metaphor: asset prices gradually rise and then fall under conditions of high demand) it provides excitement and an escape from reality. sharply and the bubble bursts – note. ed.)”.

That’s why it’s so important to remember that sooner or later the bubble tends to burst and all efforts run the risk of being just a story of failure. And the investor – in a good condition in a luxury rehabilitation in Spanish Mallorca at an expensive price (more than 75 thousand dollars for four weeks), where he will have a private villa, a chef, a butler, massage, yoga , cycling and, of course, a therapy course with a psychiatrist . But for some reason it seems to us that the game is not worth the candle.
