In 1986, Diana had a busy year touring Japan, Indonesia, Spain and Canada with Charles.

In November 1986 he embarked on a six-day tour of Oman, Qatar, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.

But privately, the couple was not happy with their marriage, and they both … Extramarital affairs.

Charles told his official biographer, Jonathan Dimbleby, in 1994 that he returned to business with Camilla Parker Bowles that year, and Diana’s relationship with Army Captain James Hewitt is presumed to have begun around the same time.

Although the copyright was sold to a charity in 1990, the photo was taken by photographer Terence Donovan.

The woman, who works for the Society for the Blind in Brighton, had the charity sign the original edition of Diana during a royal visit to charity in 1990.

Sarah Lindberg, specialist at Bonhams auction house in London, said: “Terence Donovan photographed Princess Diana three times, once in 1986 and twice in 1987.

This pose was taken from the first session and was chosen by the Royal Post as one of the images in a stamp collection published in 1998 to commemorate the life and achievements of the princess.

“It was purchased directly from the photographer by the current owner, before the then Princess of Wales visited the Brighton Society for the Blind in 1990.

“The salesman who works for the association was a huge Diana fan and bought the photo with the intention of getting it autographed.

“He made a grimace as he placed it in front of Diana and said, ‘Oh, I don’t like this picture.’

“She wanted to make herself more accessible and I think the photo was too formal for her. Still a very thought provoking sight.

It was part of a famous collection commissioned by the National Portrait Gallery but kept by the famous photographer for his personal archive.

It’s easy to see why Bailey, now 84, loves the photo. It captures a 27-year-old princess in her prime, a young mother of two who is increasingly confident in her royal role.
