Five people were shot, one fatally, when gunfire erupted in a packed downtown bar district in Lexington, Kentucky, on Saturday evening. The violence broke out around 6.45pm at Charles Young Park during an outdoor concert, sending terrified attendees fleeing for cover. The incident marked the fourth mass shooting in the United States within a 24-hour period.
Lexington Police Chief Lawrence Weathers confirmed in an update at the scene that multiple children were among those hit by bullets. A four-year-old child, a 14-year-old teenager, and two adults suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to a hospital for treatment. The outdoor concert event was scheduled to run from 6.00pm to 8.00pm when the shooting occurred.
Eye Witness Account and Video
Video footage captured during the gathering showed the moment the gunfire began, with at least 13 gunshots audible in the recording. The video was published online by Devine Carama, the director of the Lexington mayor's youth gun violence reduction program, who was present at the park.
Carama described the scene in a caption accompanying the footage, writing: "My heart is broken. This evening we had a shooting at the park with multiple victims and one fighting for his life. While trying to keep four young people covered and safe during the shooting, a person eight inches from me was shot tonight," He recalled seeing fellow attendees performing CPR on victims, carrying away a wounded young person, and emergency medical services responding to multiple casualties in real time.
Carama noted that the annual gathering on the Eastside was a long-standing community tradition. "This is not normal. We come together every year as a family and kick it on the Eastside and we haven't had something like this happen, EVER," he wrote.
Governor Address and Political Reaction
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear confirmed reports of the shooting during a speech at the Kentucky Democratic Party's Moving Forward Together event. The speech took place at the Hyatt Regency hotel in downtown Lexington, located a short distance from Charles Young Park.
Addressing the audience hours after separate mass shootings in Virginia and Michigan, Beshear called for political action on gun control. "To stop mass shootings, we have got to elect Democrats that will actually do something about it," Beshear told attendees during his address.
Police Investigation and Hospital Response
Lexington Police Chief Lawrence Weathers inspected the scene alongside officers who established a perimeter with cruiser vehicles around the park before sundown. Weathers told reporters he did not believe there was an ongoing threat to the public, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader.
Speaking to reporters at the park, Chief Weathers appealed to the community for information to help prevent further violence. "If you know somebody who might be inclined to use a weapon, please do anything you can do to let us know before something happens. Please let us know," Weathers said.
It remained unclear whether any suspect had been apprehended by police. A spokesperson for the Lexington Police Department stated around 10.00pm Eastern Time that the investigation remained active. "No further details are available at this time," the spokesperson said. Meanwhile, University of Kentucky HealthCare sent an email to staff confirming it had responded to the Charles Young Park shooting to provide medical care to multiple patients.
Wave of US Mass Shootings
The violence in Lexington was part of a series of mass shootings across the country over a 24-hour period. On Friday in Michigan, a shooting left a 45-year-old man, a 40-year-old woman, and a 16-year-old boy dead.
Police identified the suspected gunman in Michigan as Chad Hickman. Investigators believe Hickman also killed a 53-year-old man at a second home nearby before taking the life of a 29-year-old woman found dead in a wooded area alongside Hickman, who died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Early on Saturday, a separate shooting occurred at Virginia State University in Ettrick, Virginia, injuring five people, including one student. University officials reported that multiple suspects were involved in the incident. Authorities arrested a 19-year-old suspect on Saturday evening, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Later on Saturday evening, shortly after the Kentucky shooting, another incident in Chicago left four people injured, two of them critically. Authorities said a car pulled up alongside a group of people before multiple occupants fired gunshots out of the windows and drove away. The Chicago incident remains under active investigation.
