Leopard Attacks 60-Year-Old Woman in Uttar Pradesh Home

A 60-year-old woman was severely injured after a leopard sneaked into her home in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh and attacked her while she was sleeping.

The victim, identified as Jai Kala, alerted surrounding residents with her screams during the late-night attack. Neighbors rushed to her house to investigate, forcing the wild predator to flee into the surrounding area.

Kala suffered serious injuries in the mauling and required emergency hospitalization. Her condition was described as severe, according to a report by the Times of India.

The incident highlights ongoing human-wildlife encounters in rural India. Uttar Pradesh, the country's most populous state, contains extensive agricultural zones bordering forest reserves, where big cats occasionally stray into residential areas searching for prey.

Forest Department Search and Monitoring

Following the attack on Kala, the state forest department launched a search operation to locate and capture the aggressive leopard. Wildlife officials assured residents that they would take safety measures to protect the village, including establishing monitoring protocols to track animal movements.

Local residents have expressed mounting concern over the situation, reporting regular sightings of leopards near their village. In India, state forest departments are tasked with managing human-animal conflicts, often deploying specialized rescue units and setting cage traps when wild predators enter inhabited areas.

Recent Leopard Attacks in Rajasthan

The attack in Uttar Pradesh follows a separate wildlife disturbance reported in the western state of Rajasthan. In that incident, a wild leopard caused widespread panic after entering a local liquor store.

Before wildlife handlers could secure the animal, the leopard attacked two people inside the shop. The commotion inside the store was captured on video before the animal was eventually subdued.

Leopards are a protected species under Indian wildlife protection laws. However, shrinking natural habitats have increasingly brought the solitary predators into contact with humans in both rural villages and commercial districts.
