Two people were killed and four injured in a shootout near a Kurdish cultural center in Paris. Two of those injured in the shooting are believed to be in critical condition and two others are seriously injured.
According to the AP, a 69-year-old suspect was injured and arrested after he opened fire in the area after he was arrested and his gun was removed without resistance. The suspect is believed to be a French citizen who is known to the police for two charges of attempted murder.
The attack took place early this morning in the Strasbourg-Saint Denis neighborhood near a Kurdish cultural center near the Gare de l’Est train station. The AP spoke to reporters at the scene and reported that local mayor Alexandra Cordebard said the “true motivation” for the shooting was unclear.
A witness told the AFP news agency there was “total panic” and they locked themselves in their shop.
The witness said she heard seven or eight shots before she fled.
The incident brings back horrific memories of the Paris terror attacks more than seven years ago. In mid-November 2015, 130 people were killed in a series of coordinated attacks outside the Stade de France, in busy cafes and restaurants and during an Eagles of Death Metal concert at the Bataclan theater. The latter led to the death of 90 people and a battle between the police and attackers.
