Renata Litvinova

Renata Litvinova posted a self-directed video on Instagram in which she sings the lyrics of the famous Sag Mir Wo die Blumen Sind (“Tell me where the flowers are?”) translated from the stage into Russian, in a Balenciaga outfit. Photograph of the Paris theatre.

This song is considered the anthem of pacifism. It was widely performed by German singer Marlene Dietrich in the years after World War II. The work begins with these lines:

Tell me where are the flowers
Where did they go?
Tell me where are the flowers…
What happened?
Tell me where the flowers are.
The girls hastily collected them.
When will people understand
When will they finally understand?

It is noteworthy that the first three lines of the song were written by the American folk singer and social activist Peter Seeger, inspired by the song “Quiet Don” by Mikhail Sholokhov. Sitting on the plane, he reread the novel, which includes the following passage: The Cossacks, who left the village on horseback to join the tsarist army, sing:

– And where are the geese?
– They entered the marshes.
– Where are the reeds?
– The girls are bored.
– And where are the girls?
The girls got married.
– And where are the Cossacks?

“When will they find out?” the person sitting behind Seeger said aloud, referring to his children. he asked. However, the composer used this line in the song because it was suitable for his own idea.
