The Interior Ministry released a report on Thursday 15 December on the extent of domestic violence in France. The data show a net increase of 21% compared to the year 2020. “Since 2016, the number of entries has practically doubled”states the report, which suggests that this increase is explained by “a context of freedom of speech and improvement of reception conditions for victims by the police and gendarmerie services. »
87% of the victims are women
Of the 207,743 victims of domestic violence recorded in 2021, half of the victims are between 25 and 39 years old and 87% are women. High figures yet below reality. The report states that “victims of domestic violence rarely report the incidents to the security services. Therefore, according to the Genesis victimization investigation, Fewer than one in four victims of domestic violence filed a complaint in 2020. »
Domestic sexual violence has increased by 26%
In the vast majority of cases (66%), domestic violence is about physical violence. But verbal and psychological violence recorded the greatest increase (+35%).
As for sexual violence, it represents a small percentage of domestic violence (4%), but has also increased significantly (+26%). Again, women account for the vast majority of victims (98%). And if the under 20s represent overall only 5% of victims of domestic violence, they still represent a significant share of victims of sexual violence (13%). “In two years, the number of victims of rape or attempted marital rape registered by the police or gendarmerie has thus been multiplied by 1.7 »warns the report.
Femicide follows the rise
Impossible to talk about domestic violence without talking about femicides. The Interior Ministry report mentions 143 people died at the blows of their spouse or ex-spouse in 2021, a 20% increase from the previous year. Another report published in August already announced this figure and specified it 122 of these victims are women. Should we still expect an increase in femicides this year? According to the We All collective’s tally, as of Dec. 8, 126 women have already been killed by their partner or ex-partner in 2022.
