It’s starting to look like… well, like mask requirements might be on the horizon.
The New York City Health Commissioner is again advising residents to dress up. Covid is not the only reason this time, as the flu and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) are also circulating.
Ashwin Vasan, DR. NYC health commissioner, issued an advisory Friday urging residents to wear masks in public indoor spaces and during “busy outdoor activities.” The advisory has no mandate, and the city will not enforce the rule, although businesses are free to demand its use.
The recommendation comes as NYC is currently seeing 3,761 daily Covid infections, up 55% in two weeks. The city also confirmed more than 11,000 cases of flu in the last week of November.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also urges people to wear masks and recommends the action in a memo earlier this week. Her move comes in response to the worst flu season in more than a decade.
In Los Angeles, the county reported a sharp increase in daily cases that could soon lead to a renewed requirement that people wear masks in all indoor public spaces.
The province has seen a steady increase in daily infections and hospitalizations since early November. On Friday, the average daily number of new infections in the province for the past seven days was 3,053, almost 50% higher than the average of 2,121 a week ago.
