Saturday night live begins with a musical tribute to the holiday season’s ability to get people to eliminate all their fears and worries, whether it’s a drinking problem, Elon Musk owning Twitter, or Adolf Hitler being invoked in political discourse.
Bowen Yang, Cecily Strong and Kenan Thompson got into the Christmas spirit with their extended song “It’s Christmas.”
Powerful: “Elon why does he own all this stuff? Why does he have to run Tesla and Twitter? Was there not enough space?
John: “And Hitler? When did Hitler come back? In fact, years ago we all agreed that Hitler should never come back.
Thomas: “And why are his new fans black?”
The chorus: “Let’s block everything for Christmas!“
The song was a nod to Kanye West’s praise of Hitler when he appeared on Alex Jones’ show, but also the recent visibility of neo-Nazi figures such as Nick Fuentes, who dined with West and former President Donald Trump , reflect.
The gist of the opening was that the holiday season drives people to unhealthily ignore their problems, or as Yang sang: “My mental health was not good. I wake up in the afternoon and the sun kind of goes down and then I fall asleep again around eight o’clock. But I can live in a delusional state.”
Powerful: “It’s Christmas. And all my stress goes away. All the cares and worries and screams and handkerchiefs can wait for Jan – you – where – yes.”
After several versions of this comes the question: what happens next month?
“We’re exploding. We panic and threaten our ex. We drink to the point where we contemplate murder and accept Venmo payments for sex. That’s exactly what happens next, because now it’s Christmas!”
