Twitter has a 50 percent chance of a major outage during the World Cup, according to a recently fired employee.
The informant spoke to Britain observer Newspaper on condition of anonymity that he foresees a “difficult World Cup for Twitter”.
The former employee has a working knowledge of the Twitter Command Center, which takes care of the site’s functionality in the event of traffic spikes and data outages. The Observer reports that a third of this small team may have left the company in recent weeks.
The informant told the newspaper:
- Such a major outage could take the site offline during the World Cup
- An incident of late or non-performance is “almost certain” during the months of competition.
- There is a 90% chance of an error being seen by users
- The platform is “likely to struggle with traffic at launch and may crash”
He added that he was dreading the start of the World Cup, saying: “There was nothing I could do to help.”
These revelations follow Elon Musk’s quick decision to take control of Twitter to lay off half its workforce and the departure of many others following his message to employees last week demanding they sign a pledge of allegiance, to doubling the hours and efforts.
The Twitter boss remains enthusiastic about the prospect of covering the tournament, tweeting to encourage followers to stay on the platform for the best coverage and real-time commentary.
