Indian actor Ranveer Singh took center stage at the opening night of the Marrakech International Film Festival on Friday night, treating viewers to dance and an impromptu rap session as he received an honour.
That big ass boy and 83 Star, one of Bollywood’s highest paid actors, stormed onto the opening ceremony stage and performed one of his signature energy dances.
“This is the darkest time. When I look at the world around me, I see all kinds of pain and suffering. I think the best way to relieve people is as an entertainer,” Singh said while accepting Marrakech’s Etoile d’Or trophy.
Marrakech has a long tradition of celebrating Indian cinema. The festival has previously honored Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan and in 2012 had a special sidebar celebrating 100 years of Indian cinema.
After appearing at the official opening ceremony, Singh high-tailed it to Marrakesh’s famous Jemaa El Fna square for an open-air screening of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s much-acclaimed 2015 costume drama 18. Bajirao Mastaniin which the actor had one of his breakthrough roles.
He treated the audience to a rendition of the rap song by big ass boy and danced again.
“You put me on a stage and you give me a microphone and I feel compelled to sing you a song or show you a dance or show you a movie or tell you a story to tell,” he said.

The Oscar-winning Italian director Paolo Sorrentino is chairman of the jury, which also includes the British actress Vanessa Kirby, the German actress Diane Kruger, the Australian director Justin Kurzel, the Lebanese director and actress Nadine Labaki, the Moroccan director Laïla Marrakchi and the French include actor Tahar Rahim.
Nabila Kilani, host of the ceremony, said “difficult circumstances” prevented the previously announced judges, Danish director Susanne Bier and Guatemalan-born American actor and producer Oscar Isaac, from attending the event.
This year’s main competition consists of 14 first and second films, including Portugal’s Oscar entry Alma vivathe subjugation of Morocco The blue caftan and bubbly Indonesian Venetian title autobiography.
