Special: UTA promoted David Cramer to president and Jay Sures to vice president, assigning new roles to its two most established top leaders.
Co-chairs of the company since 2017.
There’s never enough room at the top of Hollywood, but insiders say the merger was done to ensure each executive could focus on their own strengths.
Jeremy Zimmer, UTA co-founder and CEO, said in an internal email that Kramer’s introduction is “aware of the important role he plays as my close strategic partner, the leader of many of UTA’s operations, and the business founder with a vision for the future.” Once again, David has become a trusted ally of his clients and a passionate advocate for our people and culture. David’s presidency underlines my confidence in the future direction and leadership of our business.
Zimmer described Sures as “the strongest player” to have made “enormous” contributions to the company in the past three decades. “He was instrumental in systematically making our television group, including Literature and Talent, an industry leader, while also representing a broad spectrum of customers,” said the CEO. “He also manages and continues to grow our news, speaker, culture and leadership teams. As vice president, we will rely more heavily on Jay’s unique combination of instincts, intelligence, deep connections and external relations to continue to advance our business in many dimensions.”
Sures and Kramer had long careers in the agency business, starting at the post office before working with UTA co-founder Peter Benedek 33 and 30 years ago, respectively. Kramer’s early career focused on film, and he oversaw the launch of more than a dozen company applications, including entire film episodes, as well as the launch of several new areas, including publishing and podcasting. Earlier this summer, Kramer led UTA’s acquisition of UK agency Curtis Brown. Along with Zimmer, he also led the process of incorporating global financial firm EQT as UTA’s largest foreign investor.
In addition to forming the agency’s television group, Sures oversees UTA’s news, speakers, culture and leadership practices, in addition to representing various clients.
Amid consolidation in the agency sector, UTA has been active on the mergers and acquisitions front. In addition to acquiring Curtis Brown a few months ago, the company acquired strategic consulting firm MediaLink and made a strategic investment in Klutch Sports Group.
