The College Football Championship Series expands from four teams to 12 teams, includes six senior conference champions and six overall teams.
The 11-member governing body of the College Football Playoff voted unanimously on Friday to determine inflation in 2026. But it will also encourage sports brokers to join by 2024.
“There are still so many problems to be solved, so many open logistical problems to be addressed, but our hope is that we can succeed. [the commissioners] Let’s move this forward as quickly as possible,” said Mark Keenum, CFP Chairman of the Board of Directors, Mississippi State.
Extended playoffs will undoubtedly increase game sales points. This year’s Georgia-Alabama national championship game drew 22.6 million viewers across multiple ESPN broadcasts. That total was the biggest event in cable TV since the 2020 LSU-Clemson game.
Still, the game was the second-lowest total for a title game since the implementation of the CFP title structure for the 2014-2015 season. For example, 28.44 million viewers watched the Alabama-Georgia championship game in 2018. CFP’s highest draw was the former Ohio State-Oregon, which was watched by 34.6 million viewers.
ESPN reports that 29% of people watch TV on Mondays, and 38% of adults aged 18-49 play games. Last season’s six college football games and finals, all on ESPN, saw a 16% increase in viewership over the previous edition.
