According to the Associated Press, Indian-British writer Salman Rushdie was attacked before his scheduled lecture at the Chautauqua Institute in New York.

While Rushdie was being introduced to the public, an unidentified man in a black mask burst onto the stage and stabbed the writer several times in the neck and stomach. The suspect, who was taken into custody, turned out to be 24-year-old Hadi Matar from New Jersey. The cause of the attack has not yet been determined, the FBI has joined the investigation.

Rushdie was hospitalized and underwent emergency surgery. He is currently on a ventilator, the author’s manager, Andrew Wylie, told Reuters.

Salman Rushdie is the winner of the Booker Midnight Children Award and author of the controversial novel The Satanic Verses, which sparked protests in the Muslim community in 1988. The work was considered blasphemous and banned in Iran. The country’s leader, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini (now deceased), issued a fatwa calling for the assassination of Rushdie.

Rushdie planned to speak at his conference about how the United States has become a place of self-expression and a haven for artists in exile.
