On the occasion of the release of the very nice animated film Luck on Apple TV +, we met the director and choreographer Peggy Holmes.

Fortune is the new film from Skydance Animation studios. This family history has filled of humor, power and of malice is a big surprisewhich made us want to meet its creator.

Sam Greenfield is the most unfortunate girl in the worldyet she remains combative, ingenious And generous. When he discovers the land of luck, the young girl embarks on an adventure to bring luck to her best friend. But with the humans forbidden in this wizarding world, Sam’s only hope is to do so team up with some creatures to live there.

On the occasion of the release of the film on Apple TV + on 5th Augustwe met the dancer And choreographer Peggy Holmes, who is also there director of the film.

Madmoizelle: I was surprised by the amount of fantasy in the film! Can you tell us how it was designed?

Peggy Holmes: The development department of Skydance Animation had done a series of research icons, symbols, numbers and colors who brings good luck or bad luck Worldwide. So I asked the storytelling team and the art department to do all that research and go crazy for two days. I told them not to don’t be limited, do not hesitate it’s simply have a good time. Two days later we met and everyone shared their work. We took elements of the real world and made them super fun and magical!

Madmoizelle: It was a good idea to imagine an unlucky character because it gives rise to very funny visual gags. Fortune pays homage to the most classic cartoons, with these scenes where everything goes wrong, the character undergoes falls and mischief, and is a lot of fun.

Peggy Holmes: Yup ! We wanted Sam to be the most unfortunate girl in the world. And the funny thing is thatshe continues to be unluckyglitches are connected again and again!

And then I have it dance and choreography training. I grew up watching artists like Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Lucille Ball or Carol Burnett. We were very inspired by them and wanted to pay homage to them through the character of Sam. Like Charlot, Sam is very affectionate because despite all his clumsinessShe never give up. And we love this about her, who has hope.

Madmoizelle: You noticed Fortune as a choreographer? Good and bad luck are expressed a lot through Sam’s body, whether lucky or unlucky, it feels like watching a dance. His movements are sometimes linked in chaos, sometimes in harmony, but often one gets the impression that all this is a choreography.

Peggy Holmes: It’s true. I can not help myself. I’ve been dancing since I was eight, I’ve had an entire career in choreography. I think in rhythm, from script to editing. For me it is about knowing: how can the body, its shape, position and rhythm tell the story? It’s fun to understand things without dialogue.

Madmoizelle: Speaking of dance, I got the impression that you were paying homage to Charlie Chaplin’s Modern Times choreography. Also, there are a lot of mechanics in the wizarding world. We are really shown the system, the mechanics, the machine. How come ?

Peggy Holmes: We wanted to create a world of magic and technology where everything worked perfectly. Because we do very complex things there. In the world of luck, nothing ever goes wrong. No ramps, handles or safety barriers are needed … Everything is perfectly rhythm, synchronized. Nothing ever goes wrong!
