President Joe Biden officially announced that a US drone strike in Kabul over the weekend killed Al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahri.
“Now justice has been done and this terrorist leader is gone,” Biden said from the White House.
“People all over the world no longer need to fear a vicious and determined killer,” he said.
Biden said the US intelligence community identified al-Zawahri when he moved to Kabul to join his family. He said he allowed a precision attack on a carefully planned mission. According to him, he gave final approval a week ago and no members of his family were injured, nor were civilians.
“Tonight, let’s say once again that no matter how long it takes, no matter where he’s hiding, America will find him and bring him out,” Biden said.
The terrorist leader was believed to be the mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks. He succeeded Osama bin Laden as leader of al-Qaeda after his death in 2011.
The mission was the first publicly disclosed counter-terrorism attack since the US withdrawal from Afghanistan last year.
