Women working on construction sites are running out of pockets and it is alarming for their safety

On TikTok, a construction worker with pockets too small for her tools talks about this sexist injustice that even damages her safety.

Working on a construction site when you are a woman can be quite a challenge. This is illustrated by a TikTok that is as entertaining as it is irritating. On popular Chinese social networks like Google, a user named Morgan, aka @almostcaptainmorgan, posted a first video asking women to testify about their working conditions in predominantly male sectors.

Among the responses, @ technically.a.tech which likely deals with construction and public works (BTP), posted an uplifting answer to your question on July 20, 2022. “your daily reminders that things aren’t right for you?”.

“Your daily reminders that things aren’t right for you? “

“Pockets. These pants I’m wearing right now are made by a brand that makes women’s specific workwear. That’s why I was particularly shocked when I realized I couldn’t even hold my phone in my pocket properly. I’m not even talking about bending over with the phone in my pocket.

Our tools are the same size [que ceux des hommes], our phones are the same size. Why are women’s pockets so much shallower than men’s? “

In other words, work clothes, which should be utilitarian, designed to be as functional as possible, also have smaller pockets in women than in men.

This is also one of the reasons people on TikTok advised in the comments to @ technically.a.tech to buy construction clothes in the men’s department. To what TikTokeuse replied in video, trying on an outfit work clothing male who couldn’t fit his size well enough to be safe on a construction site.

Women’s pockets on a construction site, a security problem

However, what may seem trivial on the surface and relatively harmless (but still unfair) to office clothes can be downright dangerous in a professional industry like construction. This actually poses significant safety problems on a construction site where personal protective equipment (PPE) must protect against the risks associated with the work.

In France, the number of injuries among female workers has exploded in recent years. The National Agency for the Improvement of Working Conditions (ANACT) has just published the results of a study carried out from 2001 to 2019 in which it is found that occupational accidents among women have increased by 42%.
